b) CLASSIFIED ROADS: Roads in the borough are grouped into five classifications, each of which is funded at different rates by central government. In 1990 the borough had approximately 1.40 miles of trunk road and 17.15 miles of principal roads (both ‘A’ roads); 9.60 miles of class II (‘B’) roads; 19.00 miles of class III roads; and about 185 miles of unclassified roads. The classified roads in the borough are :

A23 (Brighton to London, Westminster Bridge Road): Old Steine; Grand Parade; Marlborough Place; Gloucester Place; York Place; London Road; Preston Road; Stanford Avenue (part); Beaconsfield Road; London Road (Patcham). Since 1980 this has been a trunk-road to the north of the Mill Road/Vale Avenue junction, the responsibility of central government.

A27 (A36 Whiteparish, Wiltshire, to A259 Pevensey): Old Shoreham Road; New England Road (part); Viaduct Road; Upper Lewes Road; Lewes Road (to Falmer boundary). Part of the Folkestone to Honiton trunk-road, but it was not trunked between Falmer and Hangleton Road. In 1984 the section from the Falmer boundary to the Southern Water Authority office became a trunk-road; the Brighton bypass, the future A27 trunk-road, will leave the Lewes Road at this point.

A27 (spur): Lewes Road from the Vogue gyratory system to Grand Parade. Lewes Road was originally part of the A26 Brighton (now Newhaven) to Maidstone road, with the A27 terminating from the west at the Upper Lewes Road junction.

A259 (A27 Havant to A20 Folkestone): King’s Road; Grand Junction Road; Marine Parade; Marine Drive.

A2010: West Street; Queen’s Road; Surrey Street; Terminus Road; Buckingham Place; Dyke Road (Seven Dials to Old Shoreham Road).

A2038 (A23 Patcham to A27 Portslade): Mill Road.

B2066 (Old Steine to Boundary Road, Hove): Castle Square; North Street; Western Road. This was formerly the A277.

B2118: St James’s Street; Upper St James’s Street; Bristol Road; St George’s Road; Chesham Road; Rock Place; Church Place; Bristol Gardens; Roedean Road.

B2119: Trafalgar Street.

B2121: Dyke Road and Dyke Road Avenue (North Street to Seven Dials and, since 1990, Old Shoreham Road northwards via Dyke Road Avenue to the bypass junction).

B2122: New England Road (part); Chatham Place; Vernon Terrace; Denmark Villas; Montpelier Road.

B2123 (A27 Falmer to A259 Rottingdean): Falmer Road; The Green; High Street.

B2137: Arundel Road.
