Local football teams

Family photographs

These two photographs are from my late Grandmother’s tin of family photographs. They include members of my Brighton family and you may find someone from your family in there. I only know the names of my own relatives as identified by my Mum.

Brighton Tramways team

The first, almost certainly a Brighton Tramways 7-a-side team, features my late grandfather Ted Shepherd, who was an apprentice coachpainter at the Tramways. It also shows two of his brothers, Fred, known as “Jumbo” at school, and Ern, known as “Sam” apparently, as well as Harold Packham who became his brother-in-law.

Possible date of 1920?

I’m guessing that the photograph dates from about 1920, since the older lads were all born before 1910. Ted was born in a tiny house in Freehold Terrace, Preston. He worked for a short while in a photographer’s shop roughly where ‘Dr Brightons’ now stands, and moved to Weybridge, Surrey in the ’20s to paint aircraft. He was very actively involved in athletics well into his 40s, he carried an Olympic torch in 1948.

Unidentified team

The second team, with a star badge that I don’t recognise, includes my Grandmother’s brother Charlie Cool. He was born in 1903 and died of appendicitis before he was 20 years old, or so I’ve been told.

Can anyone add any information on these photographs? What about the second team? Does anyone have any ideas the team’s name? If you can help, please leave a comment below.
