  • Only a vague guess, I think it might be the bottom of Edward Street around 1952.

  • Whykeham Terrace or just below going down towards Queens Square? Where Pizza Hut is now.

  • Looks like the bottom of Dyke Road.

  • It’s definitely the bottom of Dyke Road where Pizza Hut is now.

  • The picture shows a range of old buildings in North Street, taken shortly before demolition in 1938-9. The buildings to the left survived the war though. J. Osborn, a hairdresser at number 111 was still there until the 1950s. The ‘Sun’ building replaced those on the right hand side. At the time the picture was taken, North Street extended as far as the junction with Upper North Street, but this section of road was later renamed to become part of Dyke Road. Regards

  • Yes, I agree that it’s the bottom end (east side) of Dyke Road, Brighton. The site on the right hand side of the old photo is now occupied by Pizza Hut (and Costa Coffee I think). The two shops on the extreme left were still there recently, but I’m not sure what has happened in the last couple of years. J Osborn at No 11 in the old photo became I think, Wheelers the barber shop. I believe some of the old architectural features shown in the old photo can still be seen on these two properties.

  • Actually I now think it may be a few yards below where I first thought, I think it may be North Street turning into Queens Road. I think the curve on the buildings is too gradual for the Dyke Road/ Queens Square junction. As to a date I should think it’s late 40s- early 50s looking at the car.

  • What you are looking at (the shop on the extreme left) was J. Osborne hairdressers at 111 North street Brighton (Kelly’s directory of 1949); no ifs, ands or buts !

  • My current day photo of what is now part of Dyke Road, Brighton shows that J Osborn’s old shop is presently occupied by the Big Bead Boutique (No.12 Dyke Road) and the New-Yorker has become the Pain Solutions Clinic (No 10 Dyke Road). The lower end of the grey and white painted Wykeham Terrace buildings can just be seen on the extreme left of the 2011 photo, with the junction of West Street and North Street just visible on the extreme right.

  • Yes, it is definitely on the left going down from the bottom of Dyke Road leading to Queen’s Gardens where the taxi rank is. Across Queen’s Gardens to Air Street leads you into Queen’s Road – go right down and that leads you to the North Street entrance. Across and opposite the J Osborn building is the Quadrant leading into Western Road opposite the Churchhill Square. Gamleys toy shop used to be at that end too. Going back up the hill from those buildings in the photo on the same side stands the oldest church in Brighton - St Nicholas, and opposite that church is Upper North Street.

  • It is the bottom of Dyke Road, just below the entrance to St Nicholas’ churchyard. The two shops, J Osborne and The Big Bead Boutique, were in the 50s. Tingeys coffee bar where I and many friends spent our evenings for many happy years.

    By Ralph Packham (03/09/2013)
  • Yes I agree with Ralph as my parents owned Tingey’s in the 50s and 60s.  We left to live in Australia in 1968.

  • Such a thrill to read about Tingey’s! Spent such a lot of time there in my teens, thinking it was the height of sophistication – it was back then!

  •  Best coffee bar in Brighton, and Dave Tingey was the best. Brings back memories of a misspent youth. We always met up there before and after heading to the Quadrant! Happy days.

  • Regarding the picture. It is the bottom of Dyke Road. In the lower picture where the grey wheelie bin is standing was Sexton’s book shop. I also notice that the shop which was next door to Osbornes has been well and truly modernised. (What a shame).

  • Across the road from this,my Dad used to have a second hand car business (late 50’s?) Fred Appleyard.Got pics somewhere of the cars parked in the road !
