1970 photograph

Mystery photo
Royal Pavilion and Museums Brighton

Photographed in 1970

I have been ferreting through old photos again – it’s a terrible time waster!

Can you identify this Brighton street?

Post your answer below please

Well done chaps – I am impressed with your knowledge. The title of the image is:-  ’The bottom of Cromwell Street looking North towards Elm Grove. The corner shop on Elm Grove is a pet shop.’

  • Shooting from the hip here…but it could be looking down onto Elm Grove from one of the streets on the south side?

  • Hanover area, could be looking across Queens Park Road down towards Lewes Road, just a guess as I don’t recognise it.

  • It could well be looking down Cromwell St towards Brading Road.  There was, as I recall, a red painted pet shop on that Brading Road/Elm Grove corner in those days that could very easily be the shop in the picture.

  • I’d go with that -wasn’t the shop in the photograph a pet shop on the left as you climbed Elm Grove?

  • Yep, Cromwell Street looking down. I lived in the next street along which was Baxter. I can remember playing in a  Yard with old garages which is just off to the right up a cobbled allyway, you can see it in the photo.

  • Yep, I’ll go with Geoff and Martin on this one, most certainly taken from Cromwell looking down into Brading Rd.

  • I’m pretty sure it’s taken looking towards Brading Road as well. Distant relatives of mine Stan & Floss Jarman owned the pet shop on the corner for many years.

  • Looking north from Cromwell Street towards Elm Grove and Brading Road the store on the corner was a pet store in the ’60s and ’70s I lived on Hartington Road and used to shop in the small corner shop stores in the area. So many have closed or changed their business, I miss the days when you knew the store owners and had better service.

  • 99.9% sure it’s Baxter Street, leading down to Elm Grove.
    Lived there 1980s 90s.
Used to be two corner shops, left side was a greengrocers and right corner was an old fashioned shop like Open All Hours.
Both closed late 80s and made into private dwellings.
Quite a haunted Street, several houses including mine having strange events which culminated in one having an exorcism ( No 17 as I recall)
