Damage around the storm swept beach

  • It might be worth checking the dates of these pictures. Assuming they were all taken at the same time I suspect they were from an earlier storm, not the 1987 Hurricane. The second photo appears to show the concrete caissons for the Marina still under construction, which would put it around 1975 or 1976.

  • This photo looks like it was taken in the early 70’s. The Taylor Woodrow caisson lifting crane is positioning another caisson in the eastern arm of the marina. The photo was taken from the undercliff walk roughly in line with Roedean Girls School. The walk and groynes were built in the early 1930s; by the 1970s there had been a lot of damage to the walk and groynes.

  • I don’t think this is after the 1987 storm as the RNLI had moved in 1978 to the Marina. It was then used solely by Council Lifeguards.
