Former Local Studies Library: 115 Church Street

Many happy memories

This was my work place from September 1999 until July 2003, and I have some very happy memories of being there. For many years, this building was Brighton Music Library and before that, a gas showroom. A temporary move was necessary as the local studies collection in the former Reference Library needed a home until the Brighton Museum refurbishment was complete.

Deceptively large building

I very much enjoyed helping out with the preparations for the move and it seemed quite exciting to have a dedicated local studies library. The building itself is deceptively large. Aside from the main part on the ground floor, there was a staff room behind this and a very substantial basement (which housed the Library’s bindery for many years) On the upper floor was a massive auditorium, complete with a stage and tiered seating and four further rooms, used as storage areas.

Being converted in 2010

Our most popular local and family history books and maps, as well as microfilm and fiche readers were located in the main room. Bound volumes of newspapers, rare books and the remainder of stock were stored. It was sad to see this building lying empty for so long. After being used an art gallery for a short time, I’m happy to see that it’s now being converted into a French restaurant. I think I just might be one of its first customers.
