"Just wanted to say a huge "Thank you". I have been researching my move to Brighton. Finding your site has been SO helpfull in reading up on the different areas. Now I know which ones are worth visiting and won't ahve to drive around them all. Thanks you SO much. Also I must say that the site looks so good, I really dig the pebbles. I would be delighted with any email communiaction with regards to my looming move. Ella age 28, Bristol."

"Great site. My family date back to living in Brighton from about 1850. I was born in Kemp Street, Brighton; as was my 2 sisters and father. I had an uncle who was born in New Dorset Street, and my grandfather was born in Church Street. There was a family business based at 4 New Road, near the Theatre Royal that manufactured wigs (the family trade since goodness knows when) and theatrical costumes - so I'm informed. My Great Great Grandfather moved to Brighton from the Holborn / Bayswater area of London and most of his family were wigmakers also. The business in New Road was run, I beleive, by Benjamin Walter Drury and maybe his brother Henry - I have some more work to do here. Keep up the good work - if anybody knows any more information about the above facts I would like to hear from them."

Mick Drury, 09/05/2004

"My g-grandfather, James Cooper, lived in Mackie Rd in the 50's, he would have been around 80 years old. When his (third) wife died, he moved in with his daughter Kate. As I'm in Australia I can only use the internet for research, does anyone have any ideas where I can get more information regarding his time in Brighton? Family history says that he ran for mayor at one stage, may have been Brighton or Patcham. Thanks Hilary "

Hilary, 02/05/2004

"Only recently [couple of weeks]I found this superb web site of Brighton. I have in my possession a small paperback entitled "The Brighron Blitz" by David Rowland. Published in 1997 by S.B.Publications c/o 19 Grove Road Seaford, BN25 1TP. Price six pounds. It is a remarkable book and covers the period 1940 to 1944. It is a remarkable publication and well worth the effort if you can find a copy. "

John Wall, 31/03/2004

"Excelent site, looking foward to adding my thoughts and memories. Anyone looking at expanding their knowledge of the town, I have heaps of aerial views taken 1990 & 1991 and would like to expand my collection in exchange. (To the author of this site, I'll be happy to send you a CD full of these photos for you to use as required in enlarging this site)."

Ian McKenzie, 09/03/2004

"Realy impressed, thankyou. I now live in Sweden, yet miss my home town very much. Yet havent wonted to come back for 40 years now, silly realy, I was told that it had changed so much arfter the storm you had for so many years ago. Guess I was frightened of seeing too bigger changes. All those huge trees that lined the upper part of Dyke Rd, were I lived. Or Cherry woods at westdean stadium; a playground when younger. Again, thanks for your time and trouble in creating this weldesigned sight. Will come back."

Stephen Nicholas, 04/03/2004

"I was living in Preston Village during the war from 1942 to 1960. Can anyone remember Preston Park when it was used by the Military and testing the tanks and other vehicles were watertight by driving them into a huge resevoir. I and my brother and sisters used to hide in the hollow oak trees in what is now the scented garden."

Michael White, 26/02/2004

"Hi there. I was looking at some very old maps of Brighton dated 1900 & it shows a railway line going to kemp town. The line passes over the Girotery system & goes right long side Bonchurch Road then passes directly under Elm Grove & comes out by Queens park. I just want to try n find out the history of that line & also wounderd if the tunnel is still there. email me back & i will send u a picture of it & also a link to where i found it. Also your site is wicked. its nice see the history of this town. "

"I have just made an entry about The Dome but it was not The Dome it was the Regent! Sorry!"

Heather Wilson, 23/02/2004

"My late Mum's friend, Joan (nee Mumford) played the organ at The Regent Cinema. Her Mum was so proud but she hated it! She was a beautiful girl and although nearly 90 she is extremely active for her age. Does anyone remember her or my friend Poppy Margeret (nee Baxendale). She loved dancing there and is now nearly 87. It is amazing that she was such a good dancer as she suffered from Polio as a child and has a weak side. "

Heather Wilson, 23/02/2004

"Hi, what a great site. My hobby is family research and whilst reseaching I discovered that all my past relatives lived in Kemptown during the early 1900´s. Bute Street, Marine View, Paradise Street etc. are all places where the family lived. Several family members worked at the Tamplins brewery and I wondered if anyone out there has any old photos of the Brewery and its staff during the early 1900´s (1910-1940). Another interesting part of my research was the fact that my great-grandmother's maiden name was Lundberg. The name is a Swedish surname and I now live in Sweden and would love to find relatives here. If anyone reading this knows or knows of anyone with this surname in or around the Kemptown area (Brighton/Hove) could they please contact me? One last request, are there any bookshops in Brighton where one can buy books of local history? Have a nice day, greetings from Sweden."

Phillip Baker, 22/02/2004

"Chris Norris: Ah yes, those little pieces of aluminium. You certainly brought back a memory. Thanks."

""I used to live in Littlehampton and went to school in Brighton, at Xavarian College. I travelled by train Littlehampton to Brighton, then caught a "Trolley Bus" from the station to a place called the "Pepper Pot", and then to the school which I believe has now gone. On returning from school, we would sometimes end up in a Coffee Bar called "The Penny Farthing", which I seem to remember was in the "Lanes", playing Elvis or Lonnie Donegan records. Other times we would go along the seafront to Hove, and go swimming at the King Alfred baths, what ever time I got home to Littlehampton I'll never know. Some times I would have to change trains at Worthing Central, and on the winter evenings a porter would walk along the station with a long pole pulling down the chain to light the gas lights on the platform, while I would waste a penny punching out my name out on a piece of aluminium from a machine on the platform. I think that the "growing years" that I spent at school and latterly at Art College in Old Steine Brighton, were some of the happiest I have had."

Chris Norris, 16/02/2004

Can anyone give me more information about this man. Perhaps I will write a book about him! Kind regards! Lars Olov Sjöström, Umeå university"

Lars Olov Sjöström, 30/07/2003

"My maternal ancestors all lived in Brighton from at least 1824 until the mid 1900's. John Atkins and his wife, betty left London and moved to Brighton around 1824. he was a boot and shoemaker. His son, Samuel Atkins, was also a boot and shoemaker. he married Hannah MacBride Webber in 1843 at St. Nicholas Parish Church. One of his sons, my great grandfather, Alfred Alphonse Atkins, was born in 1844 at 100 Upper North Street, and also became a shoemaker. We have a photo of him outside his shop. My grandfather, Alfred Edward Atkins, known as "Tom" married Lily Phillips at The Church of The Annunciation on Washington Street in 1899. The Phillips family had also lived in Brighton for a long time. My grandparents courted in Queen's Park. They had been baptised in St. Peter's Church. They emigrated to Canada in 1907 and settled in Penetanguishene, Ontario. My grandmother always said the town reminded her of Brighton because the main street has a steep hill, and it is on the water, Georgian Bay! My mother was named after the 2 Phillips sister who remained in brighton. Mabel Phillips married William Legendre and ran a tearoom at 24 Market Street in the late 20's. She then ran MABS Fruiterers at 74 St. George's Road. Willy worked at the brewery Shades Pub on Black Lion Street in the 20's. I would love to hear from anyone who may remember the tearoom , the fruiterer's or the Brewery Shades. "

Judy Fleming, 13/07/2003

"Some large signs have appeared at Preston Circus, advising of forthcoming roadworks between Preston Circus and South Rd in Preston Village. Does anyone know the detail of what is planned? The sign suggests a duration of four months, so presumably quite significant. I recall a plan from a few years ago for a bus lane past the park, but have heard nothing recently. Any ideas? Luke"

What about the day they cleared the beaches by the West End Cafe because a sea mine came drifting past?"

Al-Sahaf, 08/04/2003

"Geoff Meade! why do you really care if people accidentaly call it the north lanes. As far as i'm concerned I would much rather spend my time in the more up-market and fashionable lanes, than the alternative wannabee bohemian north laine with its meaningless shops and greasy spoons. Long live the North Lanes!!!"

"In the 1901 Census my Grandmother (Mabel Berry) was living at 24 St. Nicholas Street Brighton and my Grandfather (James Sharp) was living at 21 Palmeira Place, Hove. Whenever I have visited Brighton I have always found it a lively and friendly place. I am a pilot and recently I flew to the interesting airport at Shoreham and took a taxi into Brighton. Managed to find comfortable and reasonably priced overnight accommodation close to the Centre of Brighton. I wish you every success with your site."

Does anyone know the history of the copse that runs between Woodland Drive and Woodland Avenue; especially before 1950s?
By Sheldon (26/05/2006)
Sheldon asked about the copse between Woodland Avenue and Woodland Drive. I remember as a child in the late 1940s being told not to cross through it as 'bad men' loitered there! I also scared a school friend at the Brighton and Hove High School by telling her we could sleep out in a hollow tree when she came to stay. She cancelled!

Would anyone have any info on 54 Old Shoreham Road Southwick, or who lived there since it was built? It has been my home for 19 years and I would love to know its history. carolannemurphy@hotmail.com

I used to go to St Peter's Infant School, Portslade, in the War and I remember the air raid shelters which Hannah Young asked about. They have uncovered them now; they are open. I have some paperwork about them.

Hi Adrianne Heisler, I am answering your question dated 25.03.03 regarding Copperas Gap Windmill. If you type in 'Copperas Gap Windmill, Portslade, Sussex, UK,' you will find all the information you are looking for. I hope this will help you.

I was born in Brighton in 1948 and lived in Coldean till 1967. Does anyone remember De Marcos Cafe? I think it was near St Peter's Church - it made great coffee.

By Vaughan Taylor (28/10/2006)

There was mentione of the air raid shelters at St. Nicholas Infants school. I recall them being there and, one time while attending the school, peeping into the doorway - dark and forbidding. We had been forbidden to enter them. This was about 1951 when I started school there.

I attended Aryeh House School in Brighton from 1945 to about 1949/50. The principal then was a Mr. Eliasoff and the head master was a Mr. O'Brien. Some of my friends were Louis Negan, Helen Rodin (maiden name). If anyone was at Aryeh House when I was there, I would love to hear from you.

My grandfather's (John) father (John) used to own the Black Lion Pub (Richmond Street, Preston) and was born 1880 - 1890 and died around 1940s.He was well known and was quite well off. He invested £10k on Liverpool Rubber or Indian Rubber and lost the lot on Black Friday and went white haired over night. He also worked as a wheel bearer.
He was married to Alice Ann and had 4 children.Does Anyone have any reference to such a person? Any pics of the pub, street etc. as I would like to give my grandfather a christmas present incorporating this.

Many thanks for reading this and I can get more info if anyone needs.

I was born in Brighton in 1936 and lived in Richmond Road just along from my Great Uncles laundry Mayo Laundry. We lost our windows in a bomb blast and moved to Preston Drove opposite Blakers Park. I attended Ditchling Road Infants (Miss Haffenden was the headmistress) then the Junior School. We then moved to St. James Street and I went to Margaret Hardy School. I left Brighton in 1954 for New Zealand. I came back in the 60s and have fond memories of my birth town. I now live in Brisbane, not far from another Brighton which is very different. I love the web site which I found by accident. If any one remembers me or my brother, Jennifer and Michael Norrell, I would love to hear from you.

By Jennifer Goddard nee Norrell (20/01/2007)

A big thank you for this fab site.  I visit the site regularly..... being an ex-Hove lass it really gets the memories going. I lived in Hove until I was 23, but now I live in Yorkshire so don't have much opportunity to visit Brighton any more, so this site helps me to keep me in touch with my roots.  I love this site so much, and I do so hope that it will continue to grow and that more people add their pics and memories and stuff for us all to continue to enjoy.

I have just found this wonderful web site and it's such fun to read all about things of my old home town Brighton. I left the UK in 1967 and am now living in Hawaii. I would love to contact an old school friend of mine from Patcham County Secondary School. Her name was Carol Parsons and she lived at the tea gardens at the foot of Mill Hill, Patcham where we both worked at the weekends serving pots of tea and sandwiches and scones. Fun days! Does anybody know the whereabouts of Carol Parsons?

I was born and raised in Brighton. Attended Fawcett and Down's County - left in 1955 for the British Merchant Navy and ended up here in California. Anyone want to chat?

By Peter Haber (22/09/2009)

I was a young naval rating aboard H.M.S. Indefatigable in 1951 - when Britain had aircraft carriers and have fond memories of Brighton for we visited and received lavish hospitality during the Festival of Britain Week. I competed in the local athletics match against their very capable Field and Track team and was also memorably hugged by a lady Olympic-Shot putter-to-be (and survived). It was also my good fortune to fall in love for the first time (mind you I was 17yrs old at the time). The ship - as is tradition in the RN - hosted onboard a Pirate Party for children from the local Orphanages - could there have been some 200 of them...? and my heart went out to a blue eyed, dark curly haired lass of four years old called Mary. I shall always remember the date 18th July 1951 around 1300 - how do I recall....its in my diary. I wonder what happened to the children? - forget the orphanage building - but I do hope that the children were all distributed around to loveing foster-parents. So! Yes! Brighton had a strong affect on me emotionally all those years ago.....and trust that currently children not so well blesed in life are still being looked after with love and sincerity as they obviously were then.

Hello, can anyone help? Im trying to locate my family history. My dad was brought up in an orphanage in Brighton. He left when he was sixteen (1941) but had a sister that was adopted from the orphange. I can't ask my dad as he  passed away 19 years ago, he never spoke about his childhood as the home didn't treat him very well and I understand from my mum he couldn't talk about it and didn't want to locate his siste.r I'm trying to find the name of this orphanage to help my search for relatives, if you can help- thanks very much

I would like to contact Mrs Adrianne Heisler who went to Aryeh House school in the Upper Drive, Hove. l went to that school from approx 1934 to 1940 and I have very many fond memories and stories relating to my time there. I was aged 10 to 14 and I am now 85 +. My e-mail address is alexj@melbpc.org.au Very best regards

This is my favourtie site - so many menories of my childhood days in dear old Brighton. I have been back from NZ many times and always make a beeline for Brighton. Anyone remember the Brighton Accordion Club run by Eddie and Audrey Windo of the Music shop in Duke Street?

By Elizabeth Byrne (25/04/2010)

Does anyone remember the sprout factory at New England Road .. I worked there in 1964 - anyone still around?

By mick maratty (16/05/2010)

What a great site but no mention of Margaret Hardy girls school in London Road. Come on girls we had so much fun there and bunking off school to go to Bellmans to see the pop groups.

By Wendy (23/05/2010)

Very surprised that Margaret Hardy School has not been seperated from the Fawcett School in the School section of Places. It was such a large school with many pupils and it should have its own site. Went to the school from 1946 - 1952 and have many great memories of my time there. We were separate from the boys school when I went to Margaret Hardy, even had our own entrance in York Place. I believe the Schools have been demolished and built somewhere else. I left the UK in 1954 for NZ and now live in Australia. Been back a couple of times to Brighton. When you are born there it never leaves you.

By Jenny Goddard nee Norrell (19/06/2010)

I left Brighton for London 30 years ago (bad move, but necessary at the time) , and now I'm back in Sussex. I find the changes to the Hanover Estate incredible. I'm trying to find Linda, who studied in Lancaster and came back, Gabrielle, who is an architect, Richard, who was on optician and lived in Whippingham Rd, and St John Stephen, also of Whippingham Road. Any luck?

So pleased to have found this site - does anyone remember a Violet Gertrude May Morris last known address 4 Grantham Street (August l953) or any members of her family. Also looking for anyone who knew a William Botting around that same time. Would be grateful to receive any help at all. I believe Violet also resided in Sussex Street for a short time.

I regularly visit this site to stir up old memories. Lived in Brighton from 1944-1975, and although only live in Kent, really miss my home town. You can take the girl out of Brighton, but never Brighton out of the girl!

If anyone remembers some of the teachers from Patcham School on Warmdean Road (i.e. Mr. Geertz, Mr. Lisemore, Miss Collins (the one with the motorbike) and the headmistress Mrs Honeyset, please let me know who you are. I remember a lot of friends from that school, probably between 1962 or 3 to 1967 when I left to go to Canada with my parents.

I would like to let any one know of the recent death of my cousin Sheila Jones who passed away a couple of weeks ago. I have kept in touch with her through the site, and she will be sadly missed, I live away from Brighton, but like the site. I have family still in Brighton, so like to keep in touch with things, and I do visit when I can, perhaps there might be people that knew Sheila, regards

I went to Moulsecoomb Secondary Girls School from 1954-1958 and would love to know if anyone is still in the Brighton area from the same years? Names I remember are Carol Jordan, Sheila Harwood, Janet Boutle, Pat Stevens, Barbara Polkinghorn, Jaqui Francis, Wendy Austin - just a few that come to mind. Also does anyone remember Lawrence Howell who went to the boys school at the same time? I would be grateful for any information as to his whereabouts if anyone knows of him. I left Brighton in 1964 and live in the Manchester area now. I also worked in the front office of the Brighton and Hove Herald newspaper when I left school at 15, which now no longer exists, and at Marks and Spencers on Western Road, and also at Allen West before I left. If anyone does remember me, I would love to hear from you.

What a brilliant site! It has brought back many a fond memory. I love trawling through all the old pics and reading about peoples' memories. Many thanks. PS If anyone has any pics of old night clubs, such as Sherry's, Top Rank suite, the Event, Coasters, Buzby's, Orianas, the Berlin bar, Bar Centro, Pink Coconut, Paradox or Swifts, I would love to see them.

Message for Mick Maratty. If the factory you are talking about was Bird's Eye then its the same one that my mother and I worked. I went on to work at their factory in Eastbourne on night work

By kathleen catt (30/01/2011)

Hello Kathleen. Yes it used to deal with sprouts only. Some of my pals went to work at Eastbourne. Is your mam still alive?

By Mick Maratty (02/02/2011)

Hi Mick, no I'm afraid she passed away in 1993. Do you live in Brighton? We used to live in George Street when I was growing up but when we were at Birdseye I was married and had four children. We lived in Hollingbury. Are you married? I never thought I would eat another sprout after working there, but it was good fun. I have an email address kathleencatt@yahoo .co.uk if anyone else gets in contact, it maybe someone we know.

By Kathleen Catt (02/02/2011)

Hi Kathleen. Hope you are well, sorry to hear about your mum. I came down from the north east when I was very young about 17 and got a job at Birdseye. I used to work on the first belt and loaded sprouts onto belt. I met my wife there and had two daughters. I'm now a great grandad. I'm 66 now, and live in the Queensway mickmaratty@yahoo.co.uk

By Mick Maratty (03/02/2011)

I have just been going through the messages on this page and was sorry to see that Sheila Jones (nee Cork) had passed. we were good friends in our school days and not having been through all the messages, and being new to this site, I had asked if any one had acontact number for Sheila. I am sorry if I upset anyone by doing this, as I said I did not know about Sheila. kathleencatt@yahoo.co.uk

I have found out that my great-grandparents (Arthur and Charlotte Gibbs) lived at 102 Conway Street in 1881 (Census) and then they moved to 125 Conway Street in 1891 (Census). After my great-grandad died, my great-grandmother moved to 121 Conway Street where she was the housekeeper. They had 7 children. My grandfather, William, married Fanny Breden in 1896 at St Barnabus Church and they went to live in Wordsworth Street, Hove and then in 1900, when my father Frederick was born, they moved to Grange Road. My father was one of eight children. I know it was a long time ago but if anyone remembers that perhaps their nan and grandads lived nearby or has any information I would love to hear about it.

I agree with most of the above, it is a wonderful and useful site. I was born in Mayfield Crescent, Patcham and wonder if anyone recalls any of the following people: Rodney Potts,  Brian Griffin, Christine ? (nee Allright), Michael Neighbour, David Marmory (Brighton Market fishmonger), Malcolm Mowbray, the period 1944 - 1954 when we moved to Highview Way, Patcham.

By John Snelling (17/05/2011)

I attended Aryeh house 1948-1949. Does anyone rememeber me? Does anyone have any pictures of the time? I remember David Hassan, Carol Solomon, Ester Lipton the two Shirleys and few others. Anyone remembers them? Please email me with any information.

By David Baruch (23/06/2011)

Mr David Baruch, I attended Aryeh House in the 50s. If you join "FriendsReunited.UK" on the internet you will find a list of Aryeh House students who have registered there, some from the years when you attended the school. We have had two reunions in recent years in Brighton. By the way, are you related to Simone and Brenda Baruch who attended Aryeh House in the 50s? They were my classmates.

By Parvis Nourafchan (05/07/2011)

I have some great memories of Patcham. I was born in Brighton in '56, and lived in Patcham till '67. The old church hall was at the bottom of Sanyhils Ave, and is now torn down. That's where my sister met her future husband. I can be emailed at johnhutching234@comcast.net anytime if anyone remembers me.

By John Hutchings (28/09/2011)

I also enjoy this site, but never find anyone around my age, or a person that went to Pelham St High School. I left in 1944. I also wrote on Friends Reunited, If anyone grew up during World War II, no one replied, so am I that old?

By Anita (24/10/2011)

Did anyone go to Montpelier College and Clark's College between 1940 and 1949, that can remember me? Or anyone that worked at Brighton General Hospital or Bevendean Hospital. I lived in Brighton until 1965 having been at 6, Atlingworth Street up to 1940, then what was 27 High Street but has now been renumbered as 26 I think, and the Little Globe in Edward Street, then 57 Farm Hill Woodingdean.

By Ken Ross (25/10/2011)

My late hubby, Bob Howell was Patcham born and bred. if there is anyone out there who remembers him i would love to get in touch. His best mate was Bob Filby who was also Bob's best man at our wedding. We used to frequent the Wilmington pub when Jack Picton was the landlord. My darling bob died aged just 57 in Dec 2004. We had two kids and I'm now the proud nan to seven grandkids, the eldest is joining the navy in Feb- he will be 21, nine days after enlistment. Bob would be so proud of them all. Five boys and 2 girls. I miss him.
