Shingle on Brighton beach

by Dominic 2 August 2004

Some people claim that brighton beach is artificial – that the shingle was literally transported here and dumped. Surely this is nonsense? Although I’ve heard that the beach was indeed sandy at one time, I’ve always assumed that the shingle accumulates here because of the construction of the groynes and other sea defences – so one could say that the beach is indeed human-made but not in the sense of having been ‘built’. Anyone got the facts on this?
