Sylvan Hall by Steve Cavell 12 March 2005I live in one of the flats on the Sylvan Hall estate, and would be interested in any photos of the area.6 replies Re: Sylvan Hall by janis 13 March 2005I live there too! Can’t really help but try contacting the lecturers at Sussex University. As Part of there C.C.E courses, they researched the area a couple of years ago. When the area was first built the flats were Status items! But before that, I think the area was used as a cricket ground I think. Re: Sylvan Hall by Alan Hobden 18 March 2005I lived in The Limes at Sylvan Hall from 1959 to 1967, a great time to live there because the roads were cul-de-sacs and we spent hours playing football in the road! The old reference library, now the history centre, in Church Street, Brighton, has some great old maps of the Sylvan Hall Estate as it was before the more modern flats were built there. Re: Sylvan Hall by Steve Cavell 20 March 2005Thanks for the reply,I will try the uni and this is the first time I have heard anything about a cricket ground. Cheers Re: Sylvan Hall by Evelyn 30 March 2005Are you talking about the place between Ditchling Rd, Upper Lewes Road, Wakefield Road & Princes Crescent. I grew up in Crescent Road which runs off Princes. We used to take shortcuts home through the grounds of the old house when we were children. The gardens were overgrown and we had to run the risk of being chased off by a man I believe was the caretaker. We also scrumped crab apples. I remember the flats being constructed, we could walk through then, it was much quicker than the long way round. However when the residents moved inthere were some who would not let us cut through. Re: Sylvan Hall by Bonny Cother 23 November 2005Around 1949-50 Sylvan Hall was a huge white house, converted to flats. My grandparents lived in the basement, Grandad used to stoke a huge fire, I guess for the radiators of the other flats. There was a coal hole, I was told I could see the stars during daylight hours if I looked up through the grid of the cover. I dont recall seeing stars. My brother and I used to play in the rambling grounds of the Hall……there was an area my brother called, Monkey Bars, a huge metal round frame. We would seek out the tortoise who had a home in the grounds. The grand entrance….. with sloping bank of grass to a huge (to my young age) lawns. There was a rich couple who lived in the ground floor flat, occasionally they would encourage us to go in and receive gifts for Christmas. They had ceiling to floor windows down one side of their entertainment area. The huge hallway, leading to a winding staircase at one end. All so large and imposing, to a very young girl. There were two bedrooms and a huge lounge room, kitchen and utility room in my grandparents flat. I remember convalescing there after having a painful tonsillectomy at the Childrens Hospital. At night time, I could hear owls hooting, it was frightening with all the dark trees outside. My grandparents left Sylvan Hall to live in London, and I packed up the happy memories of those tender young years. Re: Sylvan Hall by Vic Bath 6 March 2007I also lived in The Limes, No 5, from 1953 until 1958 when I left to serve my National Service in the RAF. Alan, it was your Father that taught me maths, and very good he was at teaching it too. There was never any trouble in his classes. Sylvan Hall was very convenient for access to the town (now city) centre, and also very handy to jump off the diesel engined buses at the end of Bromley Road as they crawled up to the next stop at St Saviour’s Church. This activity was not recommended with the trolley buses though. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
