Barnard family

by Bob Green 20 March 2005

Does anyone remember the baker’s shop on the corner of Southover Street and Hanover or Coleman Streets, in the early 1920s? It was run by Charles Barnard and his family, and went broke in the General Strike period when Mr Barnard gave bread to those of his customers who were out of work and couldn’t pay, until he had no money to buy flour. Then his wife died after childbirth. A photograph of the shop would be treasured by me and my family, especially one showing the family name above the shop
