Re: stonepound house remand home hassocks. by Lynn 3 June 2008Stonepound house was indeed a remand home.I was sent there at age 15 for running away from home due to abusive parents.I was taken there after the Courts had decided I needed to be assesssed on medical and phsycological grounds before deciding what to do with me. Life there was tough,6 weeks, scrubbing floors, laundry,dormitories to sleep, if you dare talk after lights out you were made to stand in the corridor all night on one leg!Think I am joking? No way.If you dared to answer back to staff you were put in a room at the top of the house in solitary confinement,a mattress on the floor and a pot in the corner to pee in.Bars against the windows, and a small blanket.I was assigned a childcare officer who listened to me, and on returning to Court 6 weeks later was taken to a place of safety away from my Parents to a Home in Bexhill. The Courts realised I had done nothing wrong, but was subjected to the most horrendous treatment.On reaching 16 I was then found a place to live and started the journey of life. The girls were not bad, one had to leave a childrens home because she was to old, and had nowhere else to go. I liked the solitary confinment room, it was the only room upstairs with clear glass, I will never forget that horrible place being shouted at for not cleaning the toilets and baths properly all I did was finish to soon. I remember Miss Cordier she locked me in that room with bars on because I was talking at night. Thank God after a few weeks and running away to friends they decided I was not at fault and went to Redhill Surry to a girls home! Loved it. But will never forget the nasty crap I went through. I was a runaway, abusive parents etc. It seems I’m the only one that liked it there! I just loved the routine and being amongst the girls, food was good and the staff were very nice to me. I was there as my mother had reported me missing, when i stayed overnight with a friend. She then packed up her gear, to take off and leave me to fend for myself. In those days there seems to have been no other place to shelter a needy teenager except in a so-called “naughty girls” remand home. I had done nothing wrong. Nor had many of the girls i spoke to. Yet we were all treated like criminal delinquents. Re: stonepound house remand home hassocks. by Jeanett Dinham 5 days agoI was sent to stonepound house in October 65. I was committed at the juvenile Court in wandsworth. I liked it there, I never had a problem, the girls were nice can’t remember the staff at all. Me and two other girls runaway from there, and two of us got caught and the other girl got away, and she had no shoes on! I was moved from there, and sent to Cumberlow Lodge in Norwood, then to greenacres approved school, which was tough. I ran away from there and ended up at Bowden Hall Gloucestershire. Loved it there, and was let home June 67! All in all I did 19mths came home when I was 16. Anybody out there who was there same time as me? I really hope that all you girls had a nice life.
