Model House/Dwellings by David 28 April 2007Can you tell me anyhing about the history of Model House / Model Dwellings in Church Street where my ancestors lived in 1850/1860Thanks3 replies Re: Model House/Dwellings by Bob 28 April 2007Tim Carder’s Encyclopaedia of Brighton says (about Church Street): “…At the corner of Jew Street are the Model Dwellings, a five story block of flats originally built as housing for the poor of the town in about 1852 by a charitable trust under Dr William Kebbell.”Kebbell authored one of several reports published at the time into the insanitary state of the slum housing in this and other parts of the town in the mid 19th century.Carder says: “Mid 19th C Church Street was the haunt of beggars, brawlers, drunkards, prostitutes and thieves, the Canterbury Music Hall being particularly notorious. Some of the worst housing in the town lay to the North … where the thousand or so inhabitants, mainly fishermen and labourers togther with their pigs and other livestock, lived in apalling conditions in 175 dwellings. In the 1870s this area was the subject of the corporation’s first slum clearance scheme…”The Model Dwellings building is still there. Re: Model House/Dwellings by Andy Grant 28 April 2007David, William Kebbell was born in London around 1821 and came to Brighton in the 1840’s as a physician. In 1848 he compiled a report into the health and sanitary conditions of the town, very much alike Charles Booth did for London. His findings were grim, detailing a high percentage of residents carrying contagious diseases and poor housing conditions. He founded a charitable trust which resulted in 1852 with the erection of the model dwelling houses. These were opened in Church Street and North Street (Clarence Yard, Model Lodging House) as homes for the poor. The five storey building in Church Street still exists on the corner with Jew Street. Regards Andy Re: Model House/Dwellings by Di Halstead 20 August 2022 10:43 AMWas it necessary to be baptised in the Church of England if living in the Model Dwellings? Whilst researching family history I noticed that all the children were baptised on the same day in 1857 with the address given as Model Dwellings, North Street. My great grandfather in 1861 age 6 was living at the Sister’s of Mercy. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
