My friends and I used to get the bus from Brighton on a Saturday night to watch a group. I distinctly remember watching The Pretty Things and, the “stage” seemed to be at the same level as the audience with no barrier between the group and us. The room didn’t seem to be very large and always dark and smoky. Don’t remember how we used to get home. This would have been around 1964. Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by young again 18 December 2007yes it was smoky and the stage was leval with the dance floor i saw various acts chris farlowe, manfred man [before fame] long john baldry and many more !!!!!!! I was in love with Mick Bundy! His name came up in conversation tonight and his friend Chas Hewitt. I have stories going back to 1960’s. I often wonder what became of them. Great memories of Downs Hotel music venue.Hilary x Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Anthony Swan 16 April 2020 9:01 AMHappy memories of Downs Hotel. Always thought there are similarities with the Eel Pie in Twickenham. Especially remember Graham Bond Organisation with Ginger Baker. Same level on floor; right in your face. If you were at Hurst College, the Bundys were people to be aware off. Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Terry Fitzpatrick 21 September 2020 5:19 PMI used to live in Haywards Heath and used to go there regularly. I worked with the Bundy brothers and they were a real handful. I also knew Chas Hewitt slightly. Did anyone go to the Pilgrim in Haywards Heath? Happy days. When did you go to The Pilgrim Michael? Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Valerie Osborn 20 August 2022 10:44 AMMy friends and I went to The Downs every Sunday night, remember most of these posts. We have the Drum Sticks that Keith Moon used to throw off the stage, does any one have a poster, or flyers (did we have those in the day) just to prove The Who played there. ? Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Paul Evans 17 January 2023 10:13 PMI wasn’t aware that the Downs Hotel was so famous! As I have only known Hassocks in more recent times, I was wondering where the Downs Hotel was located. It seems hard to imagine now that there would be anything so racy in sleepy Hassocks! Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Lesley Stephens 9 April 2023 9:05 PMYes used to sneak out to go there, remember seeing the Small Faces complete with Rod. Also remember the Pilgrim Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Wiiliams John Owen 29 June 2023 12:14 PMAre we thinking about the same place? My father was a production engineer with Messrs. Fodens Ltd. in Cheshire, who during World War 2 were making Crusader and Centaur tanks, military trucks, personnel carriers and shells. Too old for military service, he would sometimes be sent away to London or the South Coastal areas. He returned after one of these assignments saying that he had been staying near to Brighton. Whether or not he should have disclosed this is questionable, but he brought back with him a brochure from The Downs Hotel! The only reason I can think of is that as an engineer he might have been involved in discussions about the proposed Mulberry Harbour. Was The Downs Hotel used as a location for such clandestine meetings between Government, Military and manufacturing personnel? Fodens certainly ended up making sections for Mulberry including some of the ‘whales’, although the workmen were never told what they were for! Photos of three pages of the brochure will be emailed separately.I would appreciate your comments. John Owen. Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by Terence Fitzpatrick 26 September 2023 10:25 AMMick Bundy. We worked for John McKinnon of Haywards Heath. Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by William Owen 5 October 2023 10:19 AM zoom zoom zoomSee my message above. W.J.Owen. Re: The Downs Hotel hassocks by michael blackburn 9 FebruaryI went to the Downs Hotel every Sunday night and to The Pilgrim on Thursdays. The Pilgrim featured mainly local bands, Johnny Fine and the Ramblers being a regular. The Downs featured all the top bands of the time,my daughter who is now in the music industry did not believe me when I told her all the groups that had appeared there. Orange Bicycle were originally Robb Storm and the Whispers and were popular at the Downs. Always wary of the Bundy Boys!
