High Street

by Adam 16 December 2007

Hi, does anyone know why a small road with no shops on off St James’s Street is called High Street? The only information I could find on this website is that the street came into existence around 1800. It seems quite a way away from the ‘original’ Brighton (Lanes) let alone the present-day commercial centre and thus seems an odd choice of name. Was this really a busy shopping street (as you’d expect a High Street to be) in days of yore? Cheers.
