Established dates

by David Ward 4 August 2009

Do you recall not so very long ago that a great many businesses had “established” followed by a date. The clone towns of today mean that most small high street businesses have disappeared together with the old established dates. As a boy these intrigued me and I recall looking out for the oldest one I could find. I seem to remember there was one at least dating to the 1700’s still trading in the 1960’s / 70’s. I suppose the old tea/bun shop in the Pool Valley would have been a suitable candidate (if it had such a date). I wonder what is the oldest established in Brighton now? There is an old proverb “clogs to clogs in three generations”. I guess that still holds true and would account for many disappearing businesses.
