Lydia Laing; 1836.

by Tim Sargeant 4 November 2009

We are trying to find out anything about Lydia LAING whose death was reported thus: “Lydia, daughter of Capt W Bailey died at Tunbridge Wells on 20th April 1836 in her 29th year”. She was the first wife of John Laing of 61 Montpelier Road Brighton. Her maiden name was either Bailey or Whitefoord Bailey. (Whitefoord could have been spelt Whitefoorde and is presumed to have been a family name. So far we have not been able to find out much about this family. What was she doing in Tunbridge Wells or did the Laing / Bailey / Whitefoord family have another residence near there? Unfortunately the TW reference library do not have copies of local newspapers as early as this but the Kent & Sussex Courier or Sussex papers may well have reported this. Any assistance appreciated.
