Although my husband couldn’t help with the rationing question (he was born 1934 – I was a post war baby) he did remember going to a British Restaurant. He seems to think they were run by the British Legion. His memory is of the one in Haywards Heath but I imagine there must have been one in Brighton, as at the end of the war, he went on a school trip to ‘the north’ and they ate in a British Restaurant in Sheffield – where they piled the plates high!
