34 chesham road by cm 16 March 2010I am interested in the history of this building especially the basement where I once lived in the mid 80’s. Can anyone help?5 replies Re: 34 chesham road by Andy Grant 17 March 2010Hi, 34, Chesham Road was built around 1864 and was not occupied until a few years later. The first use appears to have been as a Lodging House. By 1890 it was being used as a Dairy and later additionally featuring a public telephone call office. Around 1910 it was occupied by a builder, then in 1913 used as a tailor’s shop. After the First World War it became a private residence until the end of WW2. Thereafter it was used by a firm of Electrical Engineers and Lift Manufacturers, with a sub divided private flat as well. This lasted until at least the mid 1970’s. I do not know what happened after that time, but I presume it was sold off and sub-divided into residential flats. Regards Andy Re: 34 chesham road by RH 17 March 2010Can I ask how you found all that out as I would love to know the same about 33 chesham rd.Thanks Re: 34 chesham road by Andy Grant 18 March 2010Hi Rachel, The two properties were built at around the same time and had very similar histories. The original usage was as a Greengrocer & Fruiterer’s shop by William Miles (very probably to do with the Bristol Nurseries), with some of the property being occupied by tenants. It remained as being used like this until around 1932, when it became a private residence. After the war, an A. Fleming was listed as the proprietor of the Chesham Cafe, but it changed hands fairly frequently, with a Mrs. Mullett listed in 1951 and H.J. Hall in 1954 until around 1960. Regards Andy Re: 34 chesham road by Rachel 18 March 2010Thats so interesting, thank you! Re: 34 chesham road by cm 18 March 2010Hi Andy. Thank you very much for that interesting information.
