Ships off shore

by David Ward 14 February 2010

Following on from the Brabazon fly-past, does anyone recall the occasional visitations of ships that would moor off-shore between the piers. This was a fairly regular occurance in the fifties but the last occasion I recall that the populace turned out in force to see a passing ship was when the newly (then) launched “Canberra” which sailed past relatively close inshore (about two miles out) around 1960. Most visitations were by warships and I seem to recall a few occasions when the local fisherman took sightseers out to “see the ship”.
