I have a newspaper cutting from the Brighton Herald of 19/10/1833 which states that a schooner ‘Ranger’ was ‘lately launched at this place and will sail from London in a few days for the coast of Africa , and will take out Octavius Temple, Esq., the newly appointed Governor of Sierra Leone, vacant by the recall of Lieut.-Col. Finley. This ship will have on board a large quantity of merchandise for Mr. W. Cole, merchant, at Freetown, who has been 17 years in that Colony, and is well known here; as is also his brother Mr. T. Cole…… a younger brother, Mr. C. Cole, has lately arrived at Littlehampton…..’
My question is, have the Cole brothers left any trace in Brighton? I am hoping so, if they were well known in the town – William was a big time merchant in Freetown, so it is likely that he bought much of his cargo in Brighton.
