A question about Roedale Woods and farm buildings

by John Knight 1 February 2020 6:35 PM

Are the woods and various old farm buildings and road named Roedale at Hollingbury named after William Roe or derived from Roe meaning rough as in Roedean?

There is an interesting book in the Sussex University library (DA690.B78ROE) called “The Private Memorandums of William Roe”.  He was a distinguished civil servant in the 18 century.  I make the connection as his family owned most of the land making up Hollingbury. He recounts working on his plantations and must have planted thousands of trees in the Brighton area.
