Spring Gardens / Portland Street

by Judith Williamson 13 July 2020 9:57 PM

Have just received PDF certificate of an ancestor. In 1899 she was in Lancaster. In 1901 she was in Leeds, listed as a Music Hall Artiste. In 1900 she gave birth to a son at 35a Portland Street, Brighton. She stated her address at the time was 49 Spring Gardens, Brighton and working as a waitress. I can see by a present day map, the streets are close. Most people at this time gave birth at home but she would have had no family members there to help her. So you’d think maybe a hospital or workhouse an option.

Am puzzled by the addresses and wondered if someone with an interest in local/family history could throw any light on it. Thks.
