Letter from Colonel George H Coats CB to Sergeant Victor Lawrence Ross
From: Letter in the AtticThis letter was written to VLR soon after his discharge from both The Royal Pavilion Hospital and the Army, probably in November of 1917. GHC was President of the Recreational Sports Committee and editor of its monthly magazine. The letter mentions the last Gymkhana, the Blue and White Concert and the magazine. The magazine was called “The Pavilion Blues” after the colour of the Hospital uniforms. It was published between 1916 and 1920 at a price of 2d to patients of the Hospital and the R.A.M.C and 6d to all others. Its pages give us a glimpse of what was done to keep up the morale of the men. The magazine’s front cover shows a Bulldog holding a crutch saying “There’s life in the Old Dog yet”. GHC refers to VLR being satisfied with his ‘new component part’ ie his artificial leg. GHC wishes VLR peace having served Queen and Country. In a PS GHC writes ‘I have conveyed your greetings to Sir Neil and he thanks you very much’, this refers to Colonel Sir Neil Campbell.
