Evacuation

by David Blackford 13 May 2010

I know that this subject has been raised before, but Radio Sussex is doing a programme about it.
I was evacuated from Brighton in 1940?. I must have been about 7 years of age and well remember travelling by train from Brighton station with my gasmask, label and my clothes in a haversack.
It was a fairly uneventful journey apart from an overnight stay in what I believe was a workhouse with old men in a big dormitory.
I was Billeted with a family by the name of Sager in a place called Old Town – in the morrs just above Hebden Bridge.
There were several of us Brighton evacuees in Old Town – Don’t suppose anyone will read this and say “Oh, I was there too”
