The directors and producers were the Ford brothers (John and Howard) of Hove and the art director was Daniel Gomme set designer who worked for Oscar winner Peter Lamont on the last James Bond film. It was made on a very low budget but was shown at Cannes and sold very well on video in the USA and in the UK. Re: Films by Tim Sargeant 30 May 2005The answer is yes; Here’s another: “The Gelignite Gang” 1956. Also released in the USA with title “The Dynamiters” as the lead was an American private detective I well remember a scene for this being shot from the wall of St Mark’s Church Kemp Town. They were using one of the old shops which I think had been empty for some time then next to the Clarence Garage opposite the church.(Now just a petrol station called Sussex Square Garage) Apparently this was made by Francis Searle from ‘Brighton Studios’ where ever they may have been. For full details go to the IMDb site as it doesn’t appear in my Halliwells. I have not seen this film and I don’t think it was ever put onto video. We all sat on the church wall to watch and one or two of the crew showed us how the arc lamps worked during breaks when they had to change the carbons. Although I remembered this well from the time, I only fairly recently found out the title of the film from Michael Johnson whose father had the garage then. I am sure that there is an opportunity for some enterprising small cinema owner to put on a season of ‘Brighton’ films if prints still exist. Some of them were put onto 16mm for showing by the mobile cine shows which used to go round village halls and places where there weren’t any local cinemas.
