fish shops by pam 15 March 2009Does anyone remember Mr and Mrs Pike who had the fish shop in Southover Street in the 1940s any memories16 replies Re: fish shops by David 15 March 2009I remember them, very nice couple, just thought their surname was right for the fish shop. Re: fish shops by Roy Grant 16 March 2009Learnt to swim at St Lukes baths, but rather than spend on the 42 trolley fare, I hoofed it up and back down Islingwood Road. The saving was spent on post swim chips at an Islingwood chip shop. What a luxury! Re: fish shops by pam 16 March 2009Roy was that the one at the corner of Ewart Street and can you remember when there was a big fire in the shop Re: fish shops by pam 16 March 2009David did you live near there only I just wondered if anyone remembered any other shop keepers I do just checking to see anyone else did. Re: fish shops by Roy Grant 16 March 2009Think that was it but dont remember a fire. Do remember on my way back from the Pepper Pot, buying chips with onion vinegar and a cheep ice lolly (interesting combo) and although late, there were often tots just sitting on the steps of the numerous corner pubs. Re: fish shops by ken mcneill 16 March 2009 i remember mr &mrs pike as said a nice couple they did not give much away kids would ask mr pike any scraps mr pike that was the crispy bits in the fryer to some familys that fed the kids, other shops in that area gave them to the kids not mr pike he stuck a small charge on the scraps, for a brief period my aunt worked there on the chipping machine. i remember mr pike had very nice car in those days and kept it in a garage allmost opposite the fish shop not bad a car and a garage. Fame came to pikes fish&chip shop in the late 50s or early 60s mr double your money host hughie green made a fairy snow washing powder advert there i had not seen the add for over 40 plus years and one day at home i was watching tv. Re: fish shops by maralyn eden 16 March 2009I believe they had a daughter who was a teacher at Margaret Hardy School. Re: fish shops by jennifer tonks nee smith 16 March 2009 Well I never.I have been trying and trying to remember what it was I saw.I was going to put it on here ,but could not recall what the ad was for.I saw another one being made in Hallett Road ,I think that was for omo. This is what I love about this site, those odd memories one has from childhood, just need that last little nudge to complete it.Thankyou Ken.Wonder if we stood next or near each other?Incidently we used that fish shop when my mother in law lived in one of the highrises.Lovely! Re: fish shops by JOSIE J JOHNSON 16 March 2009Corner of Ewert Street .”THE COD FATHER” Re: fish shops by Tim Sargeant 16 March 2009I suspect you’ll all get fed up with hearing about my photographer mother’s old 1940s & 50s Brighton negatives and this isn’t relative to ‘fish shops’. BUT, Jennifer, in amongst these negs there is a photo of a shop front with a promotion for ‘OMO’ washing powder in the window. Unfortunately I don’t know what shop it was or quite when and I’m guessing 1952 to 1955. There are a couple of others which I may have mentioned before of ‘Godleys’ ironmongers and builders’ merchants at the bottom of Church Place Kemp Town which is advertising ‘Walpamur’ paint about the same period. (Someone on the site was enquiring about a family of this name at the time.)TCS. Re: fish shops by Roy Grant 16 March 2009Tim, I don’t know whether you recall a joke of the time suggesting that frustrated housewives put OMO packets in their windows to indicate their, “Old Man’s Out!” Re: fish shops by maralyn eden 16 March 2009Never heard that one before Roy,very funny,I wonder what the other washing powders stood for. Re: fish shops by jennifer tonks nee smith 16 March 2009Far from getting fed up Tim ,I for one would love to see your mothers work as, I would think ,would many others on here.Roy loved the joke!I had heard something similar.Certain items of washing on line served as a warning.Washed in omo of course! Re: fish shops by josie j johnson 16 March 2009I was not making a joke .It really was called that. Not been that way lately, but it definately was. Re: fish shops by John Wall VK2GQK 17 March 2009I remember before the war [39-45], there was a fish & chip shop just up into Gloucester Road from Brighton Station where we used to queue up for a ‘pennerth of chips’ or if funds were in short supply a packets of ‘scraps, all wrapped up in the latest edition of the “Evening Argus as it was then. It remained open all through the war, and in a picture just received I see it is still a fish & chip shop. It must be over eighty years old. I wonder who owns it now?
