FP Street Signs by David 4 April 2005Can anyone tell me what the street signs FP mean. THey seem to be everywhere. Thanks4 replies Re: FP Street Signs by Annie 4 April 2005As kids, in wartime we believed it meant “Fat Pig”, and avoided standing beside or under one, to avoid the insult that would likely follow!I believe it actually indicated the location of a Fire Pump and water supply to be used in an incendiary attack. But I stand to be corrected! Re: FP Street Signs by Sue Craig 5 April 2005I was told that the letters stood for Fire Protection and that, in the days before the Fire Brigade, you paid for your house to be protected – a bit like fire insurance now. Only back then, if your house was on fire but didn’t display the appropriate letters, it would be left to burn. Anyone else know anything? Re: FP Street Signs by david Shelton 23 April 2005these are from the war and are too recent for the fire protection markers. The comment about the fire protection refers to the old SUN shaped plaques from a century or more earlier, and those were from the very first insurance company. There’s one at the Salvington Windmill in Worthing.
