I am researching my family history and I have a query regarding Patcham Place . Between 1917 and 1926 Ethel Constable nee Johns address alternates between 3 Spring Street, Patcham and Patcham Place . 1917 Spring Street , 1920 Patcham Place , 1921 Spring Street 1926 Patcham Place . 3 Spring Street was the home address of Ethel’s grandmother Emily Cooter ( died 1920 ) and aunt Lucy Cooter whilst Patcham Place was the home address of her mother Florence Johns ( died 1920 ) .
My query is was Patcham Place referring to just the mansion house or was it a generic term for the surrounding area ? Considering Spring Street was directly opposite Patcham Place and on Emily’s death certificate Ethel was the informant and gave the place of death as 3 Spring Street and her address as Patcham Place I am inclined to think that Ethel lived in the mansion house .
Was the Mansion house sub divided into apartments ? Ethel’s mother was described as widow of a gamekeeper and in the past had been a domestic servant . Also Ethel had previously been in domestic service so they could have been live in servants . However Ethels husband was a railway engine fitter and in 1926 is listed as living at Patcham Place . Would a live in servant be allowed to have her husband living with her ?
Incidentally in 1921 whilst living at 3 Spring Street Lucy Cooter did house work for W W Rutherford at Patcham Place ,
