Harman Family Tree

by Gail Oldfield 28 June 2009

This is a long shot but……not long into my family tree and my aunt told me of a story about her grandad who was a ‘carter or contractors carman’ who drove ‘The Prince of Wales’ (I presume Edward VIII 1910 – 1936?)along the seafront and then he gave my great grandad his driving gloves. My great grandad was John Harman married to Charlotte Elizabeth and from the 1911 census I see there were 2 children – Rose Phyllis and John Earnest. They lived in Shirley St, Hove for a while and Mill Lane/Ellen St, Portslade.
Can anyone tell me (1)where I can find info about these drivers (2)would they have had horse and carrriage only or were cars ever used and (3)is it possible to view old newspapers/cuttings on the subject (4)anyone know of this family.
Not asking much, am I….but any info would be most appreciated.
