Infant School by John Billing 12 October 2004Can anyone provide any information on an Infant School which was in Little Western Street in the 1860’s. Many thanks8 replies Re: Infant School by David Fisher 14 October 2004I’m not sure there were such things as Infants schools per se before the 1870 Education Act, although there were obviously schools for young children. However, there is a property currently for sale in Ivy Place, which is described as a former school for the poor c1750. Ivy Place backs onto Little Western Street. This might be connected? Re: Infant School by Andy Grant 14 October 2004I have transcribed most of the Brighton directories from 1794 to 1871 and the only school that approximates the description was:- James Douglas School / Academy (Gent’s Boarding)Ivy Lodge Place, page 1012 Pigot 1832 Regards Andy Re: Infant School by John Billing 15 October 2004There is an Infant School shown on the 1880’s map of Brighton in Little Western Street, One would have thought it would have appeared in a directory sometime during its existence. But what about records held anywhere? There doesn’t appear to be any at the ESRO. Any thoughts? Re: Infant School by Alan Hobden 21 October 2004Could this be anything to do with Hove National School? This is listed in Kellys 1867 Directory, in Farman Street (which backs on to Little Western Street). Master was William Hamilton and Mistress was Mrs Louisa Charlotte Hamilton. Re: Infant School by John Billing 21 October 2004It might be the one, it is difficult to see the name of the little street which runs between Waterloo and Little Western Street, though I beleive it to be Ivy Place. Do you know if there are any records for this school? Re: Infant School by Alan Hobden 14 November 2004I think Ivy Place only leads off Waterloo Street (east side). The road above it, Cross Street, connects Waterloo Street to Little Western Street, and Farman Street leads north from the middle of Cross Street, connecting to Western Road by a pedestrian archway between two premises on Western Road itself. Even numbers are on west side of Farman Street, odd numbers on east side. Re: Infant School by Martin Self 22 February 2008My family used to live in Ivy Place from the 1860s through to 1950s. The school at the end of Ivy Place was run by two sisters I believe their name was Viccary. (spelling?)
