James Couper Structural Engineers

by Jennifer Goddard nee Norrell 1 May 2007

In 1952 I started my first job as a junior shorthand typist with Coupers. Nearly opposite St.Nicholas Church on the left next to an estate agent. Mr.Worthington was my boss [he suffered with sciatica] and would collapse on the floor whilst dictating. There was also an elderly man who worked there who I learnt to be wary of. The men who could have been draftsmen were up stairs. My pay for Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm and Saturday 9am till 12pm started at 15 shillings weekly rising to 17/6d.Time I paid my board 10/-. 5 shillings didnt buy much. How times have changed.
