Jew Street, Brighton, in 1881

by Ann Topsom 25 March

I am researching my family history and trying to find the Jewish connection. My ancestor John Masters Bromage married Edith Eliza Brown-Rogers in April 1881 in St. Peters Church, Brighton, her address was Jew Street . Her father was Abraham Brown and on the 1881 census was a french polisher and lived at 1 Model Lodging House. His wife was Elizabeth Brown-Rogers , both named on the marriage certificate. By 1891 he was living in Bread Street with his wife second wife Mary. My grandmother certainly knew we had Jewish ancestry somewhere in the family. It would be very much appreciated if anyone has any information. Thank you.
