At home a toilet was always a toilet but at school it was the school lavatories, in the street “conveniences”, at restaurants, hotels etc the cloakroom or rest room, at work the washroom and amongst some of our more genteel friends “the loo” – this whole line of thought being prompted by the Chain Pier thread which was rather drifting off the point! (And yes, the Chain Pier images are superb).
PS: Some of the people I have worked with use rather more earthy terms….
