Montpelier Road (South of Western Rd) by Debbie Lakin 6 November 2016Does anyone know what was behind the old Plumbers/Debenham store ? And what was on the site of Osprey House? Many thanks3 replies Re: Montpelier Road (South of Western Rd) by Geoffrey Mead 6 November 2016Sillwood Hall is the grand building in Western Terrace behind the store, formerly the home of Sir David Scott a director of the East India Company it takes its name from Sillwood in Berkshire, Scott’s family home. It became a hotel at the end of the 19th century and after WWII was used by Plummer Roddis as a warehouse. Permission to demolish was refused and it was left to rot away, squatted and burnt before being saved in the nick of time by a local developer John Regan who turned it into luxury apartments. The area of Osprey House I think was the site of the Starlight Rooms and a terrace of old lodging houses. Re: Montpelier Road (South of Western Rd) by Debbie Lakin 6 November 2016Thanks very much for the information. My family were boarding house keepers in the early 20th century so that makes sense. My 2 x Great Grandfather Elijah Parry also had a boarding house in Oriental Place, numbers 22 23 and 24. This is on the 1911 census Re: Montpelier Road (South of Western Rd) by Geoffrey Mead 7 November 2016Kelly’s 1914 has Elijah Parry and Henry James, boarding house[Sans Souci] at 22-24 Oriental Place Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
