Old Hove College, Kinsway by Robin Cook 3 August 2007Am trying to find information about the Old Hove College on Kingsway, any info would be good.50 replies Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by David Harris 3 August 2007I think I read somewhere that Isambard Kingdom Brunell was a pupil there, did it stand at the bottom West corner of Hove street where the block of 1930s flats are now? Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Martin 4 August 2007Hi Robin. Hove College was situated at 153 Kingsway, Hove, between Hove Street and Princes Crescent. It had various locations over the years but it moved here in the 1930’s I think. Andy of this site will be able to provide better information. I was a student at the school between 1955 and 1962 when the joint Headmasters were R.L. Cameron-Jackson and John Dickson. It burnt down in the 1970’s and was replaced by the now Princes Marine Hotel. Regards Martin Re: Old Hove College, Kingsway by Robin Cook 4 August 2007Often wondered what happened to Dixon and Jackson, someone told me a few years ago that Dixon was still shuffling around Hove, sorry about spelling Kingsway incorrectly, poor education 🙂 Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Robin 4 August 2007Hi, yes I was a pupil there from 1958 1967, I was just wondering what happened, I turned up in Hove oneday and it was gone Re: Old Hove College, Kingsway by Andy Grant 4 August 2007Robin, If you type in a search for ‘Hove College’ in the box below and look at my responses around 12/11/2006, there is more information on Jackson and Dixon. Regards Andy Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Andy Grant 4 August 2007Hi Robin, The original Hove College was founded in 1796 and for many years was located at Cliff House. The college was accessed from the western side of Hove Street, a short distance north of the junction with what was then called the Shoreham Road (now Kingsway) and occupied the plot on the western corner, where Viceroy Lodge now stands. In 1934 Cliff House was demolished and the college moved to the premises nearby, which were built in 1902. Regards Andy Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Tony Hagon 16 October 2007The only thing I can relate is that my father and uncle went there. It was around 1915 – 1922 to span both boys’ school years. I remember my father saying that the headmaster a Mr Jackson told him that he would never get a job as a monkey on a barrel organ! Re: Old Hove College, Kingsway by Rafi Allameh 8 February 2008I used to be a 3rd and 4th Former there, 1976-77, during the time of Mr. & Mrs. Lamb any news of the people from there Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by john counsell 24 August 2009went there in the 70’s with my 2 brothers have a booklet at home on hove college detailing it’s history Re: Old Hove College, Kingsway by john counsell 24 August 2009I was there during that hot summer With my 2 brothers Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by mark Turpin 11 October 2009John Counsell, I remember you! And Steve and Robert, how are you? Re: old Hove College, Kingsway by john chambers 12 February 2010Sorry, but does anyone REALLY want to know anything about the ‘old’ Hove College? I suppose I know quite a lot about it from 1942-ish (which was after it had gotten itself evacuated to Wedmore in Somerset) until 1948/49-ish (by which time it had returned tp Hove). But I can’t see the point in boring myself and everyone else by writing anything more about this unless someone has a purposeful reason for wanting to read what I might write. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by john andrews 15 February 2010ex pupil 1960s Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by David Harris 24 July 2019 12:23 PMYes I remember you Robin Cook, David Harris I was in the same class as you. Now residing in South Africa. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Mike Ingham 5 February 2020 6:36 AMI was there from 1969 -1974. Lovely old building, with an interesting array of teachers. I believe Mr Cameron Jackson wrote a book on the history of Hove College, called (I think) “For the Sons of Gentlemen”. I never saw a copy, I wonder if there are any copies still around. Happy memories… Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Tim Moreman 3 March 2020 11:30 AMIs John Chambers watching this threat still? I am very interested in knowing more about The College’s time in Wedmore in Somerset. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Jeremy Malies 11 March 2020 1:08 PMI’m doing masses of research on Hove College pupils during the world wars. (Will put it up on a website.) WWII was easy to research (we had three guys in ‘The Great Escape’ camp!) Researching pupils who died in WWI is tough though I’ve found a few. Suggestions appreciated. Anybody know of grandfathers or great uncles who might have been at the school late C19 or early C20?Jeremy Malies (1974-’78) Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Jeremy Malies 11 March 2020 1:09 PMTim Moreman – the college magazines for the years at Wedmore are kept at the wonderful (fairly new) archive centre, The Keep, near Sussex University. There is a lovely picture of the Wedmore building (Elmsett Hall ) that will come up on a Google search.Best, Jeremy Malies (1974-’78). Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Jason Sutherland-Rowe 22 April 2020 9:41 AMIt went to Hove College with my brother from 1978 until it closed. We were Rowe I and Rowe II. Some random memories – Mr Dickson with his incendiary temper, the decor (Headmaster’s staircase, suit of armour, wooden panels, grand fireplaces and surrounds), the cold gym, Mrs Jackson’s house in the garden, horrible thick pea soup, the intercom system for morning assembly. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Anthony Hall 21 May 2020 11:31 AMWhat about Miss Royal ? Who remembers and may have crossed swords with her ? Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Jeremy Malies 22 May 2020 9:54 PMShe was pretty scathing to me once circa 1975. I remember the excitement and scandal when she was spotted holding hands with Mr Lumb, the geography teacher, as they walked up Hove Street. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Contribution Form (do not delete) 18 June 2020 12:04 PMJimmy Antonio 14 June. I was a pupil in the 70’s. Mike Ingham, greenwood 3 , Debont. And many more !! Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Matthew HOFF 2 April 2021 3:39 PMI remember Mike Ingham – such a cool guy I thought, and Greenwood, who I think later had a Afghan dog. Jeremy Malies of course, we later met up again when he joined us old-Hovians (Sean Evison, William Simpson, Nigel Upton, Paul Sillience and I) when we went on to BHASVIC. Yes, Miss Royal what a gorgon, in preparation for an Algebra test, she once offered to give extra Algebra tuition to anyone from the Lower 3rd on condition they came and sat in the 2nd Form and gave up their Art & Modelling lesson. Not surprisingly no-one took up her offer (including me), in the subsequent test I scored the all time lowest mark of 19%, and she piled into me saying she tried to give “charity” marks but “you can’t help someone that doesn’t want to be helped”. It was entirely down to the quality of the teacher, because when I moved up to the 3rd or 4th Forms and changed Maths Teacher it clicked and I became one of the “Back-Row” boys. Does anyone remember Cyril Stacy the Science teacher or Maurice Farncombe the RE teacher ? Matthew HOFF, (1973-1977) Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Rodney Mann 1 June 2022 2:04 PMHi Mike Ingram,I was at Hove College from 1954 to 1959. I will never forget that beautiful building, and many of the staff and pupils. The person I remember best was a head master John Dickson, but there seems to be very little written about him, or even a photo. I was astonished when I discovered that he was a Lt Cdr in the navy in WW2. My observation of him was he was a very wise, quiet, and almost humble person. I wish I had kept in touch with him after I let the school. The book was called ‘For The Sons Of Gentleman’. I bought a second hand copy from Amazon about 20 years ago.Regards, Rodney Mann Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Emma Smith 6 June 2022 11:09 AMMr and Mrs Jackson were my Aunt and Uncle. I am so sorry that pupils at the school had such a horrible time. My Uncle certainly could be strict but had a wonderful dry sense of humour. My Aunt was the sweetest lady. I spent my first 8 Xmas holidays there. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Dave Eccott 7 June 2022 10:45 AMI went to Old Hove College from 1979-1982 when i think it closed, I remember the intercom for assembly and shouting evil loudly in the Lords prayer, the Lumbs too, awful couple! Cross Country run which went to Shoreham and back!! Miss it all good times. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Stephen Graham Harper 8 June 2022 2:03 PMI was there from 1961 -1967, and recognise names Anthony Hall and David Harris. Yes Miss Royal was a pariah. My fame was entering and completing the mile , coming third at Withdean Stadium at the age of 11. Still pretty fit and working now at 71.Regards Graham Harper Stephen] Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Michael Scholfield 11 June 2022 7:17 PMYes,I was a pupil at Hove College 1951-1957. I remember Cameron Jackson, Mr Ormowe, Mr Partridge, Mr Browne, Mr Gubert and of course Mr Dickson. What a great education given to me. Fond memories of students, Graham Aldrirtt, Duncan Shoebridge and Timothy Hutton-Birdwin, Grossman, Siefert, and Shane and Katz to name just a few. I am living in Calgary Alberta CANADA. Michael Scholfield Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Philip Talmey 15 June 2022 3:24 PMI was a pupil at Hove College from 1953 to 1959. Mr Jackson and his wife lived in a bungalow behind the school. The school had no playground and for exercise pupils went for organised walks in a ‘crocodile’ around the streets. Games were either played at Wish Road locally or at a football pitch at the top of Dyke Road, long before the present A27 Brighton bypass was built. Cross country race was also held there on a route down Mill Road, up Waterhall across the golf course and back along the road from The Dyke. The school had no permanent gymnasium and a classroom had to double by converting it weekly and all equipment had to be brought in and taken out as required. The gym master was a Mr Ansell who was ex military, extremely fit and held private tuition for the better gymnasts at a different address in Holland Road. The school eventually burnt down and the next school I attended was Shoreham Grammar School which also no longer exists as it was demolished in the sixties and replaced by a health centre. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Nigel Upton 16 June 2022 3:22 PMAntonio, were you the budding football star who had a trial with Chelsea or one of the other London clubs? This would have been about 1972. Dreadful school for sports. In later years I remember we had a First team who regularly got thrashed by other schools. The rest of us were too short (me), too tall and lanky, too fat, simply unfit or lazy. As this group of misfits, we kicked a ball around Hove Rec, we didn’t even have proper goalposts. Hoff – I saw somewhere that Squirrel Stacy was teaching at the school in the 1960s or even 50s, long before our time. Hove College was a sort of Fawlty Towers school. Dickson was a clever guy though. He was wasted there. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Stephen Ritter 16 June 2022 3:25 PMI was at Hove College from 1952 until 1957, when I left to go to Brighton, Hove & Sussex Grammar. We referred to one another by our surnames and I can remember Solar, Leekham, Tregaskis, Ormow (spellings guessed) and Ross. Ormow was the son of a strict, but fair master. I was deeply in love with Miss Royal and attended her drama classes. I was chosen to perform in a play at the Dome. I, together with another pupil had no lines, but hid behind a screen until the last moment when the star of the play said “and these are my two sons”. And we emerged. At break, we walked in crocodiles and played on the green opposite the school. After the Coronation, we watched “Flight of the White Heron” in the gym and were each handed a memorial Coronation handkerchief. Which I still have. Mrs Bertie was my form mistress at one time and noticed my short sightedness. Several of the masters succumbed to TB or cancer and a couple were mildly eccentric. I’d be happy to contribute more detailed recollections and can be contacted at the email address given in the submission form. Steve Ritter Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Richard Treharne 17 June 2022 2:28 PMI was there 1976-80. Er er Mr. Lumb! By then Mrs. Lumb (very imposing). Wacko Ward? Mr Dickson liked me as was good at maths. He did catch Graham Joyner and me getting ahead of the Wednesday cross country run up to the top of the copse by Devils Dyke Rd, hiding, doubling back and going home early. In his office 9am the next morning! I just said yes we did it and he said don’t do it again! Thought he was going to do one of his famous rants. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Andrew Valentine 23 June 2022 9:05 AMI was at Hove College from 1951/2 untill late 1960s. I was told by Dixon that I would never get a job even as a bus conductor !!! I well remember Mis Royal, very unpleasant. Does anyone remember the the horrific Yvonne Kenworthy , head of the junior school. I heard she got the sack, not before time. As a point, I never was a bus conductor, but a head cashier for two of Londons largest retail and Entertainment organisations. I remember many of the teachers being unpleasant and patronising. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Rafi A 12 August 2022 9:40 PMI was at Hove College as a 4rd and 4th Former from 1976 to summer 1977. I remember Mr & Mrs Lamb and also Mr Dickson. Also remember Mr Jackson passing away circa Autumn 76 – may they all rest in peace -Rafi Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Jim Macdonald 31 August 2022 6:18 PMWas a pupil at the College from 1961 to 1967. Remember Dickson being a genius – must’ve memorised the entire book of cosigns and logarithms – and Cameron Jackson sitting at the back of the class, chain smoking Senior Service and instructing a “Boy” to write on the blackboard. Miss Royle was horrendous but cannot believe no-one has mentioned Group Captain Rowe and perhaps the nicest teacher of all, Wing Commander Harding. When I was there, the bowling alley opened at King Alfred and we spent many a lunchtime bowling and many a break in the shelter on the prom having a fag. Great days. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Philip Burden 8 September 2022 10:16 PMHi,from Philip BurdenI and brother Peter were at Hove College early 150s, I remember Gimbert, Poupard, Dunn, Deacon, Vergee, Barry Cook, French, Studdard.Peter ( no longer with us) worked on the Daily Mail. Also Garry Dunn, Mayor of Brighton. What about Gubert ( ” I warn you my boys). McCoy ( teacher).Lots of good times, Liked football plus that ‘ Tuck Shop’ across the road for lemonade after a match.I and my wife stayed at the hotel which replaced the school. However, Dickson & Cameron Jackson were hopeless. Yes Miss Royal. Mrs Braddock?? I was there with Graham Wilson, Adrian Sellens, Bruce Wheeler & Harold Turner. We all lived in Haywards Heath/Hassocks area. Fond memories Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Simon Booth 6 February 2023 9:49 AMI was a pupil from 78 – 80. Remember the Lumbs,Mrs Nicholson, Mr Voice , Alan Evans Graham Joyner Max Shultz Alun Bysouth Marcus Hill Richard Treharne Tim Veal Matthew Montebello , loads of Persian lads..good days .Sorely missed. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Roy Poupard 15 March 2023 10:07 AMI was there from 1953 to 1958. And certainly remember many of my fellow pupils Philip Burden ( mentioned here) . Gimbert . Vergee, Studdard and others. I see you all today as you were then of course. Miss Royal is often mentioned – Mr Jackson’s secretary . Ghastly creature, couldn’t stand her.. Lovely old school so sad it burned down…. I have lived in Vancouver Canada for the last sixty years where I became a lumberman… Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Philip Burden 9 April 2023 9:04 PMTo: Roy Poupard. Hi, RoyWho would have thought you would have become a lumberman…or me an Editor. What happened to Gimbert who lived in our road ? Just heard that Garry Dunn, former Mayor of Brighton has died. How did you become a lumberman ? How did I end up in the Ministry of Defence ?Are you married, family etc ? We’ve got a son and daughter. The years slip by so quickly but, like you, I remember school days. We moved to London as my dad, a journalist, got fed up with long train journeys.Once remember going to a birthday party at your place, Worthing I think. My main interest today is UFOs. Yes, they are real. Too many members, however, of the ‘fruit and nutcase gang’ around ! For them believing is seeing.P.S. An MOD civil servant I knew was called Poupard. I once told him I knew someone of that name at school. He didn’t know you or your family.BestPhilip Burden Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Russell Bates 5 July 2023 8:25 AMNot sure if this thread is still going! I was there around 72 to 75. Was in the same class as Jimmy Antonio, Matthew Greenwood, Mike Ingham and Dubont ( forgotten first name) and Howard Crown. I remember PE consisted mainly marching around the very small Gym. Also Dickson kissing the microphone while taking assembly. I used to live in Langdale Gardens and had many a good time playing football in Wish Park. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by David Stubberfield 16 August 2023 12:17 PMI was a pupil 1959-1965 Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Roy Poupard 16 August 2023 12:17 PMTo Phillip BurdenWhat a pleasure to hear from you Phillip . So many years have gone by with so many memories I could share with you but here we are suddenly a couple of old men. living far apart. I did eventually run a successful lumber trading company in Vancouver BC for many years – even exporting to the UK. Married (divorced) now with children and grand children , some living in Australia. So great to hear from you. Hope you are well and happy. Roy . Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Philip Burden 31 August 2023 10:57 AMTo: Roy PoupardHi, RoyOld men…I don’t think so. It’s all in the mind (that’s what I keep telling myself ) !We’ve been watching those terrible fires which have spread around many parts of Canada. Hope they missed you.I came close to organising a Hove College Old Boys’ reunion but, frankly, found that too many others were giving me orders as to what should happen, where etc…so nothing happened.Like you it’s best to remember others as they were then.I must congratulate you on not only having a successful lumber business but also exporting to the UK.In addition to Editor of RAF News I was posted as a Press Officer to a number of other places…including Northern Ireland. Very glad when that detachment finished !BestPhilip Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by John Locke 26 September 2023 10:25 AMI was at Hove College 1966-1971. So interesting to reflect, from my 70s, on those days. Dyslexic (not diagnosed until after I left), a school failure, physically weak and often out of school sick, there was simply no time and space for such boys! These were teachers who had fought a World War only twenty years before! Group Captain Rowe, behind enemy lines, Jackson, British Army first into Berlin, Dickson, RN, torpedoed twice in the North Sea etc etc no time for “Stupid Little Boys” like me!! All the teachers probably trained in that one year post war training opportunity that the forces offered!! I would not find my educational footing until, as a mature student I went to Sussex University at thirty one, where I excelled going on to gain an M.A. and nearly a Ph. D. defeated by time, tide, family calling and the need to earn a living!! How do I feel about Hove College, in that era now? Still not sure; but greatly respect all the teachers however painful, harsh and personally destructive it seemed at the time. Re: Old Hove College, Kinsway by Andrew Morris 9 FebruaryWas at the College in late 50’s early 60’s – left after ‘O’ levels in ’65. Many memories. Dickson teaching us Latin on Sat mornings – playing football & cricket in Wish park – FrancIs Brown standing in for morning Assembly on the microphone based between the third forms ( “and now we’ll say the “Our Father”) the gymn which doubled as a class-room (2nd?) – becoming a prefect & being allowed to use main staircase – the gong in hallway etc., Teachers: Beauclerc Ashford Collinet Williams Cottle Kenworthy…. Pupils: Maltby Milby Ockenden Selwood Hodge Barling Taylor Green Brooks ……. the list goes on! Headmasters: Jackson & Dickson. Houses: Grix Avery Tate & Parrish. Many memories!
