Old Hove College, Kinsway by Robin Cook 3 August 2007Am trying to find information about the Old Hove College on Kingsway, any info would be good.24 replies David Harris, 3 August 2007I think I read somewhere that Isambard Kingdom Brunell was a pupil there, did it stand at the bottom West corner of Hove street where the block of 1930s flats are now? Martin, 4 August 2007Hi Robin. Hove College was situated at 153 Kingsway, Hove, between Hove Street and Princes Crescent. It had various locations over the years but it moved here in the 1930’s I think. Andy of this site will be able to provide better information. I was a student at the school between 1955 and 1962 when the joint Headmasters were R.L. Cameron-Jackson and John Dickson. It burnt down in the 1970’s and was replaced by the now Princes Marine Hotel. Regards Martin Robin Cook, 4 August 2007Often wondered what happened to Dixon and Jackson, someone told me a few years ago that Dixon was still shuffling around Hove, sorry about spelling Kingsway incorrectly, poor education 🙂 Robin, 4 August 2007Hi, yes I was a pupil there from 1958 1967, I was just wondering what happened, I turned up in Hove oneday and it was gone Andy Grant, 4 August 2007Robin, If you type in a search for ‘Hove College’ in the box below and look at my responses around 12/11/2006, there is more information on Jackson and Dixon. Regards Andy Andy Grant, 4 August 2007Hi Robin, The original Hove College was founded in 1796 and for many years was located at Cliff House. The college was accessed from the western side of Hove Street, a short distance north of the junction with what was then called the Shoreham Road (now Kingsway) and occupied the plot on the western corner, where Viceroy Lodge now stands. In 1934 Cliff House was demolished and the college moved to the premises nearby, which were built in 1902. Regards Andy Tony Hagon, 16 October 2007The only thing I can relate is that my father and uncle went there. It was around 1915 – 1922 to span both boys’ school years. I remember my father saying that the headmaster a Mr Jackson told him that he would never get a job as a monkey on a barrel organ! Rafi Allameh, 8 February 2008I used to be a 3rd and 4th Former there, 1976-77, during the time of Mr. & Mrs. Lamb any news of the people from there john counsell, 24 August 2009went there in the 70’s with my 2 brothers have a booklet at home on hove college detailing it’s history john counsell, 24 August 2009I was there during that hot summer With my 2 brothers mark Turpin, 11 October 2009John Counsell, I remember you! And Steve and Robert, how are you? john chambers, 12 February 2010Sorry, but does anyone REALLY want to know anything about the ‘old’ Hove College? I suppose I know quite a lot about it from 1942-ish (which was after it had gotten itself evacuated to Wedmore in Somerset) until 1948/49-ish (by which time it had returned tp Hove). But I can’t see the point in boring myself and everyone else by writing anything more about this unless someone has a purposeful reason for wanting to read what I might write. john chambers, 12 February 2010Sorry, but does anyone REALLY want to know anything about the ‘old’ Hove College? Now residing in South Africa. Mike Ingham, 5 February 2020 6:36 AMI was there from 1969 -1974. Lovely old building, with an interesting array of teachers. I believe Mr Cameron Jackson wrote a book on the history of Hove College, called (I think) “For the Sons of Gentlemen”. I never saw a copy, I wonder if there are any copies still around. Happy memories… Tim Moreman, 3 March 2020 11:30 AMIs John Chambers watching this threat still? I am very interested in knowing more about The College’s time in Wedmore in Somerset. Jeremy Malies, 11 March 2020 1:08 PMI’m doing masses of research on Hove College pupils during the world wars. (Will put it up on a website.) WWII was easy to research (we had three guys in ‘The Great Escape’ camp!) Researching pupils who died in WWI is tough though I’ve found a few. Suggestions appreciated. Anybody know of grandfathers or great uncles who might have been at the school late C19 or early C20?Jeremy Malies (1974-’78) Jeremy Malies, 11 March 2020 1:09 PMTim Moreman – the college magazines for the years at Wedmore are kept at the wonderful (fairly new) archive centre, The Keep, near Sussex University. There is a lovely picture of the Wedmore building (Elmsett Hall ) that will come up on a Google search.Best, Jeremy Malies (1974-’78). Jason Sutherland-Rowe, 22 April 2020 9:41 AMIt went to Hove College with my brother from 1978 until it closed. We were Rowe I and Rowe II. Some random memories – Mr Dickson with his incendiary temper, the decor (Headmaster’s staircase, suit of armour, wooden panels, grand fireplaces and surrounds), the cold gym, Mrs Jackson’s house in the garden, horrible thick pea soup, the intercom system for morning assembly. Anthony Hall, 21 May 2020 11:31 AMWhat about Miss Royal ? Who remembers and may have crossed swords with her ? Jeremy Malies, 22 May 2020 9:54 PMShe was pretty scathing to me once circa 1975. I remember the excitement and scandal when she was spotted holding hands with Mr Lumb, the geography teacher, as they walked up Hove Street. Contribution Form (do not delete), 18 June 2020 12:04 PMJimmy Antonio 14 June. I was a pupil in the 70’s. Mike Ingham, greenwood 3 , Debont. And many more !! Matthew HOFF, 2 AprilI remember Mike Ingham – such a cool guy I thought, and Greenwood, who I think later had a Afghan dog. Jeremy Malies of course, we later met up again when he joined us old-Hovians (Sean Evison, William Simpson, Nigel Upton, Paul Sillience and I) when we went on to BHASVIC. Yes, Miss Royal what a gorgon, in preparation for an Algebra test, she once offered to give extra Algebra tuition to anyone from the Lower 3rd on condition they came and sat in the 2nd Form and gave up their Art & Modelling lesson. Not surprisingly no-one took up her offer (including me), in the subsequent test I scored the all time lowest mark of 19%, and she piled into me saying she tried to give “charity” marks but “you can’t help someone that doesn’t want to be helped”. It was entirely down to the quality of the teacher, because when I moved up to the 3rd or 4th Forms and changed Maths Teacher it clicked and I became one of the “Back-Row” boys. Does anyone remember Cyril Stacy the Science teacher or Maurice Farncombe the RE teacher ?
