park by Viv Webb 9 August 2009Where did Saunders park get it’s name from??3 replies Re: park by Lottie 9 August 2009Tim Carder says the 4.2 acre park on the site of the old Lewes Road waterworks was opened in 1924. In the same year Arthur and Benjamin Saunders offered a an area of their land behind the pumping station to the Corporation for £1,000 and the park was named after them. Arthur and Benjamin also purchased a wooden building that had stood in the Pavilion Gardens as a workshop for the disabled since WW1 and presented it to the Municipal Golf Club at Lower Roedale as a clubhouse. Benjamin James Saunders CBE JP was awarded freedom of the Borough of Brighton on 23 September 1937. He is said to have done much to promote children’s sport , chaired the local employment committee, presented land at Hollingbury to the town and contributed to the development of the Preston Park cycle track.
