Royal Hussar by Veronica 28 July 2005One of my ancestors is listed as living at Royal Hussar possibly in Lewes Road. Can anyone tell me if this was a public house?5 replies Re: Royal Hussar by j 28 July 2005yes it was in coombe terrace Re: Royal Hussar by Ian Gray 28 July 2005Still is, indeed – now called The Lectern I think. Re: Royal Hussar by Veronica 29 July 2005Cheers guys for that information,it really is useful to my family tree research. Re: Royal Hussar by Robert Ellis 19 May 2020 7:55 AMOpposite were the Royal Hussars and The Ship public houses, a fish and chip shop, Chinese and Indian takeaways, a laundry, a betting shop, a Halifax Bank outlet in an estate agent’s, a paper shop, a barbers. So all the things a single soldier wants. Being on the main road, easy bus ride into town.At the time of my posting (79 – 81), the Royal Hussar was by far the favourite public house where military and civilians freely mingled and a lot of long lasting friendships were made. The Landlord was David Jones, who made us all welcome as he knew where our money mainly went and quite freely bought the rounds towards the end of the month. A really nice family friendly pub where even the military chefs would have meals, because Dave ran a pub that would be difficult to match elsewhere. Also there was never ever any trouble as I am sure people got to know he had security close by. Potential trouble makers actually became good friends with the other clientele. When I retired from the Army in 2000 my wife and I decided to go back to Brighton for old times sake. I wish I hadn’t, all the good places appeared trashed, the King & Queen was a very popular place to go, clean, mock Tudor, decent beers and wines including a bar length’s shelf full of Gales wines. In 2000, it looked like a run down squat covered in graffiti, bad taste in music and hardly any lighting. Safest drink, anything in an unopened can. We didn’t stay long. Royal Hussar we popped into during the daytime. Someone had attempted to turn it into a sawdust and spit pub, it didn’t work and we left without getting to the bar. Brighton had turned into a real Sodom and Gomorrah, we left the next day. Oh, and the Barracks was in the process of being demolished.Sorry I took so long to send this but I was not aware of the ask, but it did remind me of the good times and they really were good. Regards. Re: Royal Hussar by Stephen paul 6 February 2023 9:49 AMAccording to my Mum, Charles Harry Banks was its manager for a long time. I don’t have dates but he was born in 1903.
