shops in Upper Lewes Road

by Pam Blackman 26 October 2004

I have just read Rita Denman’s detailed and vivid memories of shopping in Elm Grove in 1930s on this website.
I wondered if other people have memories of the shops in Upper Lewes Road. In this street during the 1920s there were 3 grocers, 3 greengrocers, 2 sweetshops, 1 general store, a fish and chip shop (there is still a fish and chip shop at 94) as well as numerous other shops and commercial premises. In the early 1950s there were even more grocers (6) and 2 newsagents/sweetshops but only 1 greengrocer. There was also a dining -rooms (at no. 93)
Does anyone remember shopping in this street (or even working in one of the laundries or other commercial premises ) any time during the last 50 years?
