Maralyn Re: St Johns School Carlton Hill Bton by David Wickham 4 July 2007I was in the Infants and then the Juniors from 1945 until 1949. Headmaster was Mr Witton. My Mum worked in the school kitchen. David Re: St Johns School Carlton Hill Bton by sheila jones 5 August 2007I was at this school 1947/48 very tiny and remember little canvas beds for afternoon naps. and a teacher that had boiled water for a drink! Re: St Johns School Carlton Hill Bton by David Hurrell 6 August 2007I was there just after you in 1949. I met up with a school friend from those days a couple of years ago in London and he gave me a photo of the school class which was taken in 1950. His name was Geoffrey Shisler.I remember the canvas beds for naps, too.Mine had a blue cat shape stitched on to it. Re: St Johns School Carlton Hill Bton by David Wickham 9 August 2007I certainly remember those afternoon naps in the Infants Class. I can picture the teacher, but not her name. Also in the Infants School, was Miss Payne and Miss Grout. I was in the school nativity play Christmas 1948, which we had in St Johns Church. David Re: St Johns School Carlton Hill Bton by dave 28 December 2007 Hello,I came across this site by accident and I am glad I did it has brought back many memories.I started at St Johns Infants at the age of 4 in 1955 and remember the teachers then as head mistress as being Miss Grount and the teachers as Miss Bailey nice lady and Miss Cameron not so nice she wore glasses and used to wear a red mauve paisley patterned apron thing. other things that I remember are the lead lined clay box with a big lump of clay in it that the kids used to play with and the little canvas beds that we would have a sleep on,also the play ground that had railings in the wall looking over to Kingswood Flats.Does enyone remember the steep wooden staircace that was at the end of the hall running from left to right that went up to Miss Grounts office?.I also went to st johns junior school I remember the teachers there as Head Master Mr Hambidge from birmingham/Mr Barnwell/Mrs Slack/Miss Rogers/and suppy teacher called Mr Arzoni .I could go on. hope this is of some help. Dave. Ps. I would love to see some photos of that area from those days if anyone has any, I would gladly pay for copys.
