Technical College by Dan Hill 8 June 2006Can anyone tell me anything at all about the history of the technical college by the level? Literally, anything!6 replies Re: Technical College by Bob 14 June 2006According to Tim Carder’s Encyclopaedia of Brighton The Brighton School of Art began life in the kitchen of the Pavilion in 1858. In 1874 it became the School of Art and Science and two years later moved to a new Italianate building by John Gibbins in Grand Parade (replaced in 1965 by th present school of art deigned by Percy Billington and said to be one of the better sixties buildings in Brighton. Brighton Corporation took control of the college of art and science from the trustees in 1892 and removed the science department to Richmond Terrace to form the Municipal Technical College. Re: Technical College by Ron Denman 20 June 2006I attended the Tech 1949/51 taking an external University of London BSc(Eng). The only one of my lecturers that I can remember was Dr Hughes (Edward Hughes D.Sc.(Eng), Ph.D., M.I.E.E.) author of “Applied Electricity” the bible of budding electrical engineers. At that time the Tech had a mascot called The Drogulus. I never knew whether it was pottery or papier mache but during my time there it was stolen by, I believe, Brighton College. It was subsequently recovered. I wonder what happened to it? Re: Technical College by Ron Denman 23 June 2006I attended the Tech 1949/51 taking an external University of London BSc(Eng). The Level was a park and playground between London Road and Lewes Road. It was territory that was disputed by our school and Fawcett Secondry Modern over on London Road. I think I have some photographs somewhere of the area and the school. I currently live in the Chicago area with my family. E-mail rogersturt@sbcglobal.net Regards, Roger. Re: Technical College by Peter W 19 April 2007I remember the Drogulus, it lived in the hallway of the Lewes Road building in 1953 if I recall correctly. I also remember Dr. Hughes and used “applied Electricity” as I suppose all Brighton Tech electrical engineering students did. Happily, after six years in power engineering I saw the light and moved over to electronics.
