The Brighton Basketmaker

by Honor Wimlett 23 October 2008

I collect old stereoviews of Brighton and have several labelled as “The Brighton Basket Maker”, showing the interior of what might be a corner building, filled, naturally enough, with baskets of all types. I understand from The Brighton History Centre that this was probably located in what is now The Basketmaker’s Arms in Gloucester Road. Does anyone have any more information about this, please? Would there have been only one basketmaker’s premises in Brighton? Was it a pub at the same time or converted to a pub afterwards? Any information very welcome!

One of the stereo views is shown in “A Seaside Album” by Philippe Garner (an excellent book.) The original photographs were taken by W. H. Mason Jnr.
