My ancestor John Boyce of Tiverton Devon (where there were lots of Boyces) gives his birth as Circa 1820 in Brighton. His marriage certificate of 1845 gives his father as W. Boyce, tidewaiter. I believe this is a kind of early customs officer. Does anyone have information on either the job, or better still, the family? I would be most grateful.
