western road by liz 19 December 2007does anyone know any relevant background history on Western Road please??1 reply Re: western road by Lottie 19 December 2007It’s tempting ask “relevant to what?”Tim Carder’s Encyclopedia of Brighton says it was originally a narrow track leading from North Street to Hove Church. A number of large houses were built with gardens backing onto it in the early 19C but by 1830 Western Road was developed as far as far as Montpelier Road and was the principal access to Brunswick Town (the community around Brunswick Square). It was named after the land-owning Western Family. By 1860 the entire length was lined with shops. It was very narow and the Brighton Corporation began acquiring properties in 1906 for road widening which took place bewteen 1926 and 1936 when most of the large stores on the north side were erected. Churchill Square was developed in the late 1960s. All according to Carder. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
