YMCA

by Honor 27 September 2009

Hello – I’m told my father (William Dixon born 1899 in West Hoathly) lived at the Brighton YMCA at some point in the early 20th century. I’ve never been able to find him on the 1901 census but in 1911 he is with his adoptive mother, Mrs Tugwell in Foundry St. I don’t know if his stay at the YMCA was before or after his adoption. Does anyone know how I can find out, please? Did the YMCA generally accommodate homeless or orphaned boys and at what age would they have taken them? As far as I know, it was the YMCA building near the old Shades Bar. Thanks!
