Our view
And this is our view. North across the valley that was Eastwick Bottom but is now called Mackie Avenue. I wrote my doctoral thesis on this view; below my garden are other late 1940s houses, in the valley a variety of small estates that date from the 1920s and larger ones from the 1930s.
Testament to planning
Behind the cherry tree on the left can be glimpsed old Patcham village and in the distance on the South Downs [now a National Park] is the Chattri, the monument to the Indian dead of WWI. Open downland is a testament to the planning decisions of pre-war Brighton and the 1947 Town Planning Act. In 1939 this was the view from my [then open] hillside still essentially the same today.
Just out of this shot is the Devils Dyke to the left and Ditchling Beacon to the right. It was the view which won the decision for us to buy the house.
