Extract from the diary of Margery May Barrett
From: Letter in the AtticIn her diary entries for August 7 and 8 MMB writes in 1940 that both the piers at Brighton are ‘cut in two’ and the beach was being mined. In 1940 she writes of 6 German planes overhead and 20 of ‘our fighters’. In 1941 MMB was busy with the black out curtains. In 1942 she took tea at Shelley’s Hotel in Lewes and that night drunken Canadian soldiers knocked at her door. In 1942 MMB registered for National Service. In 1943 warning notices appeared in Lewes telling visitors to leave by August 17 1942 after which there would be certain travel restrictions. In 1944 MMB attended a fete in the grounds of Southover Grange in aid of the Red Cross and St Johns Ambulance.
