From: Letter in the AtticIn her diary entries for August 11 and 12 MMB writes in 1940 of German planes over the Lewes sky. In 1941 Auntie Nellie’s furniture arrived and Aunt Nellie was to stay until she was ‘straight’. 1942 MMB notes that Eastbourne was badly raided in the night, MMB was on ‘SP duty’ and saw the glow in the sky from Lewes. In 1943 the sweep failed to come on the 11th as arranged and the following day she notes ‘Wartime domestic muddle! Sweep not coming till tomorrow’. In 1944 MMB writes of Churchill’s visits to battle fronts in Italy, meanwhile she notes that ‘In France the Germans are in a flap’.
