Letter from Arthur Jolly to C Massey in Auckland, New Zealand
From: Letter in the AtticLetter is written from 11 Wilbury Gardens, Hove. C Massey was a fellow Mason and AJ refers to him as ‘Bro Massey’. AJ thanks him for a parcel, which contained shortbread, which AJ says is unobatinable in England, cooking fat, welcome because the ration is one ounce per person per week, and soap. AJ’s daughter, June Jolly was at home, ill having been working in the east end of London prior to taking a Social Studies degree at Southampton University. AJ writes that the Revd Purvis Boyes is in Auckland at present, he holds high office within the Presbyterian Churcn and is a member of Hove Rotary Club. AJ also relates Masonic news, three new lodges have been sanctioned in Sussex, which will bring the total of Lodges in Sussex to almost 100. He says that their work is based on ‘Emulation’ but they operate using ‘Sussex working’. Rationing has curtailed the after proceedings of their meetings.
