Butcher's sausages

My wife and I left Brighton back in the 1950s but we have been reminiscing about the fabulous pork sausages we used to buy – full of sage – wonderful taste.

We’d love to be reminded. The name of one butcher comes to mind, possibly “Longs”, possibly Baker Street? – and another, possibly in Gardener Street.

We were moving around the Country with the RAF but whenever my mother visited us she always brought our favorite sausages.

  • You are correct about the butchers in Baker Street, it was E.E.Long pork butchers, My uncle Earnie owned it and he had a secret recipe which went with him when he retired! It was opposite the Co-op at the bottom of Baker Street

  • We always bought sausages from ‘Longs’ butchers in Baker Street, Brighton around the 1970-80’s. They were the best ever and have never found a sausage like it since!

  • I suggest you try the Bangers shop in Baker street.
Not only the best sausages around but also meat pies to rival the old hot pie shop that used to be up St James street. ( yes they also have Beanno pies )
    Every thing made in store.
When ever we visit the old home town from Canada this is one of our first stops.

  • Brighton generally had some good sausage makers, possibly due to the fact that the Horsham Pork and Bacon Co. supplied good pork. I worked in the butchers shop in Preston Village and we had a huge sausage trade. We made a “Special” using the recipe that originated in the kitchen at Preston Manor. We were also one of the first butchers to make burgers in the town, making several thousand each week and supplying many of the cafes in the town.
