Extract from the diary of Margery May Barrett
From: Letter in the AtticIn her diary entries for May 31 and June 1 MMB writes in 1940 that soldiers were guarding the road near Falmer. On June 1 1940 she received a ‘frantic letter from Auntie Nellie’ saying that her friends were making arrangements to leave Lindfield. Aunt Nellie arrived that afternoon and was to stay for some time. In 1941 MMB writes of being unable to get extra milk from the milkman and notes the onset of clothing rationing. In 1942 MMB writes of the RAF raid on Cologne on the previous Saturday in which over 1000 aircraft took part. In 1944 MMB writes that the town was full of rumours of invasion.
